Facebook Won’t Allow ‘Suicide’ Livestream Of French Euthanasia Supporter

TOPLINE

Facebook said Saturday it would block the planned livestream of a terminally ill Frenchman who wanted to broadcast his death on the social media platform, after the man’s refusal to eat, drink or take medicine violated the platform’s rules against portraying suicide, according to Agence France-Presse.

KEY FACTS

Alain Cocq, who suffers from a rare condition that causes the walls of his arteries to stick together, said French President Emmanuel Macron turned down his request for euthanasia.

Cocq, 57, said he believed he had less than a week to live and wanted to broadcast his death, adding, “the road to deliverance begins and believe me, I am happy; I know the days ahead are going to be difficult but I have made my decision and I am calm,” according to AFP.

Cocq has used his plight to draw attention to the situation of terminally ill patients in France who are not allowed to “die in line” with their wishes.

Facebook has faced criticism over what it allows on the vast social media platform and on what it blocks;  a Facebook spokesman told AFP that while it respect’s Cocq’s decision to “want to draw attention to this complex question, following expert advice we have taken measures to prevent the live broadcast on Alain’s account; our rules do not allow us to show suicide attempts.”

key background

Facebook’s role as gatekeeper has come into sharp relief in the past few weeks as, in the United States, it has looked to ban posts that glorify violence,  and also plans to ban political ads in the final days before the presidential election on Nov. 3. In 2017, an Alabama man livestreamed his suicide on Facebook, according to media reports, which sparked concern among law enforcement officials that others might try to mimic the act unless the social media giant could find a way to stop it.
