UFC On ESPN+ 34 Results: Winners, Bonuses, Reactions And Video Highlights

The 40-year-old Alistair Overeem showed that experience can give a fighter an advantage over a younger man who might have more power and a higher striking output. In the main event of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 34 fight card, Overeem scored a fifth-round TKO win over 29-year-old Augusto Sakai. The loss was the first of Sakai’s UFC career.

Overeem has become a patient fighter over the past few years and it has paid dividends for him. He doesn’t waste time or energy. On Saturday night that approach paid dividends as he landed his significant strikes at an insanely high rate of 80 percent.

Overeem went for his first takedown in the third round and he had success wit that attempt. He landed another takedown with nearly two minutes to go in the fourth round. During the time Overeem spent on the ground he poured on heavy strikes. By the time the fourth stanza came to a close, Sakai looked like he no longer wanted to be in the fight.

When the fifth round began, Overeem did not waste any time taking the fight to the mat. He put Sakai on the ground with his third takedown and began another ground assault. It did not take referee Herb Dean long to put an end to the fight.

After his victory, Overeem said he intends to take some time off, but he might be back for another fight in 2020.

UFC on ESPN+ 34 took place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The entire card streamed on ESPN+.
