Lindsey Graham Challenger Raises $1.5 Million After Setting Up Plexiglass Barrier At Debate

Topline

Jaime Harrison, the Democrat challenging Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) for his seat in the Senate, said he raised $1.5 million since the pair’s first debate on Saturday night, during which Harrison spoke from behind a plexiglass barrier, as his campaign continues to rake in record sums amid a tight race.

Key Facts

“Since I took to the debate stage yesterday, we’ve raised over $1.5 million,” wrote Harrison on Twitter (fundraising platform ActBlue didn’t immediately verify the sum with Forbes, though a Harrison campaign spokesperson affirmed this amount was raised).

In recent weeks, Harrison, a Democratic National Committee associate chair and former state party chair, has emerged as a strong threat to the three-term GOP incumbent in an extremely competitive race, matching Graham in polls and leaving him in the dust in terms of fundraising

On Saturday night, the two met face-to-face for a heated first debate, with Harrison setting up a plexiglass barrier between himself and the South Carolina senator while criticizing the Trump administration’s response to the pandemic.

“Tonight, I am taking it seriously,” he said, explaining: “That’s why I put this plexiglass up, because it’s not just about me.”

This appeared to be interpreted favorably as money began pouring in during the debate, a spokesperson from Harrison’s campaign told Politico, totaling at least $340,000 an hour after the event ended.

These funds will add to Harrison’s already sizable fundraising advantage.

Key Background

Though the Harrison campaign did not immediately provide Forbes with a figure, Harrison has outspent and out-raised Graham to the point where the Republican senator has taken to Fox News to plead for funding and to complain Harrison is “killing me, money-wise.” During Saturday’s debate he said his opponent could end up bringing in $100 million during the election cycle. Harrison has managed to drum up heated competition in a state won by a wide margin by President Trump in 2016 and whose legislative chambers, statewide offices and congressional seats are almost entirely made up of Republicans.

Crucial Quote

“Where the hell is all this money coming from…?” Graham asked during the debate. “They hate me. This is not about Mr. Harrison. This is about liberals hating my guts because I stood up for [Supreme Court Justice Brett] Kavanaugh when they tried to destroy his life. This is about me helping Donald Trump.”
