Amitabh Bachchan’s appearance as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2000 brought him back into the limelight, and his role in Yash Chopra’s Mohabbatein further revived his career.

Amitabh Bachchan, who recently turned 82, has experienced both the peaks and valleys of stardom throughout his decades-long career. Though he’s now one of India’s most revered actors, his journey wasn’t always smooth. In the 1990s, when his films struggled at the box office and he stepped back from acting to focus on his business, the audience’s reaction was far from supportive. In a 1999 interview with Vir Sanghvi, Bachchan shared a painful memory of being publicly abused for his acting while traveling with his parents.

Bachchan revealed that one day, as he was driving with his parents, people on the street leaned into his car window and hurled insults at him. “They would put their heads inside the window of the car and be abusive about my acting abilities,” he recalled. What made it even more disheartening for the veteran actor was that his parents were sitting in the backseat during the ordeal. “You feel bad. And you feel worse because your parents are sitting behind you in your car,” Bachchan said, reflecting on the deeply humiliating moment.

In the same interview, the superstar opened up about his early struggles in Mumbai. During his early days in the film industry, people would often stop him on the streets and tell him to leave the city, believing he was wasting his time pursuing an acting career. These comments shook him, and at one point, he considered leaving the movie industry altogether, noting that he would step away “when people don’t want me anymore.”

However, just a few years after this interview, Amitabh’s fortunes shifted dramatically. His appearance as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2000 brought him back into the limelight, and his role in Yash Chopra’s Mohabbatein further revived his career. Today, he continues to be a beloved figure, both as an actor and television host, proving that resilience and perseverance pay off in the long run.
