Toyota to drive in sub-10L SUV – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Toyota Motor is set to enter the sub-Rs 10 lakh SUV category in India, riding on its partnership with Maruti Suzuki.
The company will drive in the sub 4-meter SUV, to be called ‘Urban Cruiser’, and the model — its cheapest off-roader ever in the market — will be sourced from Maruti Suzuki, which is offering a customised, specially-developed version of the Brezza mini SUV.
The companies are expanding their relationship beyond the Baleno car that they already share. Toyota has been sourcing the Baleno hatchback from Maruti Suzuki and sells the model under the name Glanza.
The model-sharing relationship stems from the agreement that Toyota had signed with Maruti’s Japanese parent, and its compatriot, Suzuki around the year 2018.
“We are confident on the Urban Cruiser and the model will be positioned very aggressively,” Naveen Soni, senior VP (sales & marketing) of Toyota Kirloskar Motors, told TOI. “The Glanza has helped us in getting a large number of first-time customers into Toyota’s fold, and with the Urban Cruiser, we are confident of making a bigger say in the sub-Rs 10 lakh market as demand here remains strong.”
The company has already sold 25,000 units of the Glanza in the last one year.
As Toyota gets deeper into the entry-level market, the company has also been expanding its retail presence. Soni said that it has 376 sales points, and 50 fresh ones will be added by the end of this year.
