Facebook Ramps Up Purge Of Hate Speech, Misleading Covid-19 Content In Runup To Elections

TOPLINE

Facebook pulled 22.5 million posts it classified as hate speech between April and June as per the latest findings published in its Transparency Report, more than twice as many as it deleted in the previous quarter, as it seeks to reverse public perceptions that it’s soft on policing misconduct on the platform.

KEY FACTS

Facebook also removed 3.3 million posts that violated its hate speech policies on Instagram in the second quarter.

In comparison, Facebook removed 9.6 million posts deemed to be hate speech in the previous quarter.

Facebook also removed 8.7 million posts related to terrorism and 7 million misleading posts on coronavirus.

From next year, Facebook will invite external experts to independently audit the metrics used in these reports, beginning 2021.

Key BackGROUND

In June a number of prominent companies including Adidas, Ben & Jerry’s and Ford  suspended advertising on Facebook over the company’s failure to address hate speech on the platform. The “Stop Hate for Profit” Movement asked advertisers to pressure the tech giant to adopt stricter policies against racist and hateful content on its platforms by pausing all spending on advertising with the company for the month of July.
