10 Great Movies You Don’t Want To Miss Before They Disappear From Netflix At The End Of September

On the first day of October, we’ll see a wave of new movies flood onto Netflix
NFLX
. But also on that day, myriad movies will disappear from the world’s premiere streaming service.

Luckily, you have plenty of time to watch one of your favorites—or, perhaps, discover a new favorite. Dozens of movies will be gone come October 1, so I decided to sift through all of them and pick out ten I think are worth watching.

Here’s each one of those movies, along with trailers and why I think they’re worth checking out.

2012

Sometimes Roland Emmerich gets a bad rap—and, honestly, sometimes the criticism is deserved. But to this day, I’ll never understand why critics didn’t like 2012. The thriller starring John Cusack, Amanda Peet and Woody Harrelson owns all of the great blockbuster staples we enjoyed in Emmerich movies like Independence Day and Godzilla—so, what’s the deal? I think it’s worth giving 2012 another chance.

The movie supposes a world where the predictions about the world ending in 2012 come true. When Earth finally starts to cave in on itself, a failed writer (played by Cusack) must attempt to lead his family to safety.

A Knight’s Tale

Ah, a classic of my childhood! Heath Ledger is missed dearly by anyone who consumed movies in the late 1990s/early 2000s, and A Knight’s Tale might have been his most enjoyable project. A heartwarming love story, hoards of charming humor and a rocking soundtrack? Yes, please.

A Knight’s Tale centers on peasant-born William Thatcher (who is played by Ledger). In order to win the love of a fair maiden (played by Shanynn Sossamon), he must pretend to be a knight and enter a jousting tournament.

Frances Ha

Noah Baumbach really blew up in 2019 with his critically adored Marriage Story, which was nominated for six Oscars and won Laura Dern an award for Best Supporting Actress. But Baumbach had already been building his filmography for years with movies like The Squid and the Whale, Greenberg, While We’re Young—oh, and the fantastic Frances Ha.

Frances Ha follows a New York woman (played by Greta Gerwig) who attempts to realize her dreams by apprenticing at a local dance company.

Inside Man

When Spike Lee and Denzel Washington come together, beautiful things can happen. Malcolm X and Mo’ Better Blues were classics from the 1990s, but the two also came together for the highly entertaining crime thriller Inside Man in 2006.

Inside Man focuses on a tough detective (played by Washington) who goes toe to toe with a successful bank robber (played by Clive Owen).

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park had a short-but-profitable run on Netflix these past two months, ranking as one of the streaming platform’s most popular movies in August. But it looks as though the film’s Netflix stint is already coming to an end, as Jurassic Park will be leaving the digital library come October 1.

The classic 1993 blockbuster follows several different characters who are chosen to tour an island theme park filled with dinosaurs recreated from prehistoric DNA.

Million Dollar Baby

The only Best Picture winner on this list, Million Dollar Baby has strangely failed to remain culturally relevant 16 years later. And that’s a shame, because the hard-hitting boxing drama from the minds of Clint Eastwood and Paul Haggis has, in my opinion, has aged beautifully since its release.

Million Dollar Baby centers on a veteran boxing trainer (played by Eastwood, who won an Oscar for the movie) who reluctantly decides to start training an aspiring female boxer (played by Hilary Swank, who also won an Oscar for the movie!).

Starship Troopers

I really just can’t get enough of Paul Verhoeven’s movies. Every single time one of his classic films is met with contempt from movie critics, the project goes on to stand the test of time and age beautifully. RoboCop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct—and, of course, the sci-fi epic Starship Troopers.

Starship Troopers focuses on the distant future, when Earth is at war with a race of giant aliens. The story follows several soldiers partaking in the battle.

The Devil’s Advocate

There are two ways to watch The Devil’s Advocate. Either you’re flabbergasted by the overt drama and wacky storyline…or you’ve learned to love the goofiness and enjoy the entertaining romp for what it is. Personally, I prefer that second method.

The Devil’s Advocate centers on an aspiring Florida defense lawyer (played by Keanu Reeves) who accepts a high-ranking position at a New York law firm. Everything takes a twist, however, when he learns a satanic secret about his boss (played by Al Pacino).

The Social Network

While The Social Network was nominated for eight different Oscars, the classic 2010 film could only muster three wins—none of which were for Best Picture. But with Facebook still dominating headlines to this day, The Social Network has remained just as relevant as it was ten years ago.

The movie tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg, who invented Facebook in 2003. What follows the historic undertaking is lies, betrayal, romance—and some really financially and emotionally draining court battles.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Sometimes Kevin Smith rubs people the wrong way. But Zack and Miri Make a Porno is pretty difficult to hate, in my opinion. In fact, it seems downright shameful to trash on what is actually one of Smith’s most endearing projects.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno’s plot is right there in the title. Two friends (played by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks) decide to make a pornographic film in order to pay off the striking mound of debt they’ve accrued.
