6 Ways Blackpink Made History On Billboard’s Dance Sales Chart Last Week

Every song featured on Lady Gaga’s new album Chromatica sold well in the first week they were available, but those with high-profile features tended to sell better than the rest. One such cut almost snagged the top spot on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart last frame, and by doing so, the girl group who worked with the pop singer made history in at least half a dozen ways.

Tied As The Highest-Charting Song By A South Korean Act

While “Sour Candy” may be an incredibly popular dance song, it wasn’t quite the most popular track in the genre in the country last week. That honor went to Gaga and Ariana Grande’s “Rain on Me,” which held atop the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales for another frame.

The Blackpink/Gaga collaboration did find its way to No. 2, and in doing so, it tied with one other cut as the highest-charting tune by a South Korean musician. Two years ago, Steve Aoki and BTS’s “Waste It on Me” also lifted to the runner-up rung. No piece of music with a name from the Asian country attached has been able to claim the throne on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales list, at least not yet.

Second Top 10 Hit By A South Korean Group

“Sour Candy” joins “Waste It on Me” as just the second song by a South Korean group to rise into the top 10 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, though that sum will surely climb in the coming years.

Third Top 10 Hit By A Korean Act

Looking at music released by both groups and soloists, “Sour Candy” is the third top 10 hit by a Korean act on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart. In addition to Blackpink’s first win and Aoki and BTS’s collaboration, Psy and CL’s “Daddy” also broke into the highest area back in 2015, when it peaked at No. 7.

Fourth South Korean Act To Reach The Top 10

As is clear by looking at the titles mentioned above, Blackpink is just the fourth musical act of any kind from South Korea to appear inside the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart’s top 10. They join BTS, Psy and CL, all of whom remain some of the biggest and most successful artists from the country.

First South Korean Girl Group To Chart

Of the half-dozen or so South Korean musicians who have created a track that becomes popular enough to appear on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart, Blackpink is the only girl group.

Third South Korean Group To Chart

Two other groups (which are not made up of female artists) have also landed on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart at one point or another, bringing the total to just three names from South Korea. Both BTS and Monsta X have also managed to land a bestseller that fits under this genre description.
