A Look At How Blackpink Made History On The Canadian Albums Chart With Their First Full-Length

One week after Blackpink finally gifted the world their first-ever full-length The Album, it began appearing on charts left and right, and it made history seemingly everywhere it landed. That was especially true in Canada, where the group behind the successful launch performed better than ever in several fashions with an impressive starting point on the all-encompassing, all-genre Canadian Albums chart.

Below are three ways Blackpink’s The Album made history when it arrived on Billboard’s Canadian Albums chart.

Highest-Charting Album By A South Korean Girl Group

Last week, The Album kicked off its time on the Canadian Albums chart at No. 5, a lofty position most artists would be happy with. The set didn’t just instantly become the best placement on the tally for the artists themselves, but for all acts that fit their description.

The Album’s No. 5 peak now stands as the highest-ever position for a South Korean girl group, as it bests Blackpink’s previous best showing on the Canadian Albums chart, which they managed last year with their Kill This Love EP. That set rose all the way to No. 8.

Fourth-Highest-Charting Album By A South Korean Musical Act

The Album is, shockingly, just the sixth release by a South Korean musical act of any kind to find its way into the top five on the Canadian Albums chart. Interestingly, it now stands as the fourth-highest-charting project from a soloist or band from that part of the world.

Three albums by South Korean musicians have claimed the highest spot on the Canadian Albums chart, with all of them belonging to BTS. The septet’s trio of chart-toppers (at least so far) are Love Yourself: Answer, Map of the Soul: Persona and Map of the Soul: 7. The same act once saw two efforts narrowly fail to snag the throne, as Love Yourself: Tear stalled at No. 2 and Love Yourself: Her only went to No. 3.

At present, BTS is responsible for the three titles that are tied as the highest-charting among all South Korean launches, as well the second and third-highest-charting albums as well. Blackpink’s The Album is the fourth-highest-charting, and their previous drop Kill This Love moves down on this all-time ranking and becomes the fifth-highest-charting title by a South Korean act in Canadian history.

Second South Korean Group To Chart Multiple Top 10 Albums

As is mentioned above, The Album is Blackpink’s second release to find its way into the top 10 on the Canadian Albums chart, which sets them apart from nearly every other musical act from their home country.

At present, Blackpink is just the second-ever group from the Asian nation to chart more than one title inside the highest tier. They join BTS in this feat, though they will surely see this group expand at some point, perhaps very soon.
