All Of The ‘Tiger King’ Drama That Has Unfolded Since The Series Ended

Though the news cycle has moved on, the drama between Tiger King stars Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin has continued to unfold in recent weeks, with Baskin winning ownership of Exotic’s former zoo, and police revealing new evidence about the mysterious death of Baskin’s ex-husband.

KEY FACTS

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister announced Tuesday that two experts hired by the department could not verify the will of Jack “Don” Lewis, Baskin’s former husband whose death under mysterious circumstances were explored in the show.

The forged will gave Baskin most of her millionaire ex-husband’s estate and private Tampa zoo, which she turned to Big Cat Rescue after his death, leaving little for his children and their mother, his ex-wife Gladys Lewis Cross, according to Entertainment Weekly.

“They had two experts deem it 100% a forgery,” Chronister said in a Tuesday interview with Tampa Bay 10.

Separately, the Clarion Ledger reported that the notary and power of attorney listed had no recollection of authenticating the documents.

Earlier this month, a judge in Oklahoma gave Baskin control of Joe Exotic’s former G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma in the ongoing lawsuit between the two.

“While we again acknowledge it is truly time to pray for justice for George Floyd’s family as well as an end to systemic racism in America, we must address Carol [sic] Baskin’s treachery before it goes unchecked,” a rep for imprisoned Joe Exotic (real name Joe Maldonado-Passage) said to CNN on Thursday via Twitter in response to the court’s ruling.

Exotic is serving a 22 year prison sentence for plotting to murder Baskin and abusing animals, though he has maintained his innocence and appealed to a higher court.

Big number

34.1 million. That’s how many views Tiger King racked up in its first 10 days on Netflix, according to Bloomberg.

Tangent

In yet another shocking twist, Vince Johnson, who was hired by Exotic to write the song “I Saw A Tiger” (then “Killer Carole” which was not featured in the show) signed a record deal with BMG on Thursday, according to Rolling Stone.

Key Background

Tiger King, which debuted March 20, the start of U.S. stay-home orders for the coronavirus pandemic, became the breakout hit of the quarantine era. The show follows the drama between exotic animal zookeeper Joe Exotic his extensive run-ins with the law and battle with fellow exotic animal zookeeper Carole Baskin. The docu-series has been optioned for a scripted series, with Nicolas Cage set to play Joe Exotic, though the air date remains unknown, according to Variety.
