Another Trump Staffer—A Military Aide Supporting The President—Tests Positive For Covid-19

Topline

Another President Trump staffer, a member of the military personnel assigned to support the president, tested positive for Covid-19 this weekend, according to multiple reports, as the Capitol Hill coronavirus outbreak continues to grow.

Key Facts

As first reported by CNN, citing information from an anonymous person familiar with the matter, this military aide was among those assigned to support the president in the Oval Office and his residence, information that has since been confirmed by The New York Times

The White House did not immediately confirm this report with Forbes, nor has this person’s identity been made public.

News of another staff infection comes amid rising concern over the safety of those closest to the president, who, still infectious, returned from Walter Reed hospital on Monday night after three days, brushing off the virus’s severity with comments like: “I feel better than I did 20 years ago!”

Trump’s decision to briefly leave Walter Reed in a motorcade on Sunday to visit supporters waiting outside sparked backlash over the danger posed to the Secret Service members driving the infected president around.

The White House has also been hesitant to disclose cases among less senior officials, reportedly asking two housekeepers who tested positive for the virus to use “discretion” when discussing their diagnoses.

Chief Critic

“My heart goes out to everyone touched by this virus, from those at the White House, especially the Secret Service and residence staff whose service ought never to be taken for granted, to all those whose names and stories most of us will unfortunately never know,” said former First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday, unleashing criticism on the Trump administration’s response to the virus in a campaign video for Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Key Background

When asked about how Trump will be quarantined in the White House upon his return, the president’s personal physician Dr. Sean Conley remained vague on the details at a Monday news conference, saying: “We’ve worked with our infectious disease experts to make some recommendations for him to keep things safe down at the White House for the president and those around him.” Infections among Trump’s aides and allies continue to tick upwards, now totaling at least 12. On Monday, Trump’s Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany announced she’d tested positive for the virus after days of testing negative, during which time she continued to work at the White House and interact with reporters.
