Blackpink Tie Psy’s Record For The Longest-Charting Dance Hit In The U.S. By A Korean Act

On the latest edition of Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, Lady Gaga and Blackpink’s high-profile cut “Sour Candy” dips slightly, slipping from No. 16 to No. 18. That’s a barely noticeable decline, and an impressively small one for a cut that has already spent as much time on the tally as the multi-lingual hit has.

With one more turn on the ranking, “Sour Candy” makes history by tying an all-time record, and it inches closer to true greatness.

“Sour Candy” has now spent 21 consecutive turns on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, which stands as a record when looking solely at music produced by artists from South Korea. The tune is now on the same level as Psy and Snoop Dogg’s “Hangover,” which also earned 21 stays on the ranking during its heyday last decade.

Last week, “Sour Candy” was tied with several other hit singles for the second-most weeks on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart among artists from the Asian nation. “Daddy” by Psy and CL and “Waste It on Me,” a collaboration between Steve Aoki and BTS, both racked up 20 frames on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart before departing. Blackpink’s duet with Lady Gaga was tied with those smashes, but now it has passed them for good.

“Sour Candy” helped Blackpink make history in another fashion when it arrived, as it lifted all the way to No. 3 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, a lofty enough placement to make it the second-highest-charting cut fronted by or featuring a South Korean act in the tenure of the genre-specific list. Since then, it has continued to perform well, racking up enough streams and sales to live a surprisingly long life on the tally.

All signs point to another frame somewhere on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, as the tune hasn’t fallen into the lower half of the ranking. When Billboard refreshes the dance-focused roster once again, Blackpink is bound to pass Psy’s longest-running hit on the tally, earning a twenty-second stay with one of the most beloved successes. After that, there’s no telling how long it will continue to find space on the 50-spot list, and it may wind up holding on to the title of the longest-charting release in history by a South Korean act for years.
