Bong Joon-Ho Short Film Series Included In London Korean Film Festival Lineup

Set to run from 29 October to 12 November, the 15th London Korean Film Festival will offer both physical cinema and online screenings this year, amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Opening with the European premiere of comedy-drama Pawn by Kang Dae-kyu, the festival also features a Bong Joon-ho short film series showcasing early works like Incoherence (1994) and Influenza (2004).

Riding the waves of Korean cinema’s astronomical rise on the global stage, the festival will bring more than 40 films this year to UK audiences across sections like “Women’s Voices,” “Classics” and a special programme on “Friends and Family.” LKFF is organized by the Korean Cultural Centre UK, with the support of the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism, Korean Film Council and Korean Film Archive.

One top-bill title at the festival is the disaster flick Ashfall which stars Lee Byung-hun, Ha Jung-woo, Ma Dong-seok and Jeon Hye-jin. Another major film that will screen at the festival is Hong Sang-soo’s The Woman Who Ran.

Actor-director Jung Jin-young’s debut feature Me and Me is also part of the lineup. Previously, Jung had shared that his first dream — at 17-years old — was to be a director, not an actor. Me and Me follows a detective as he investigates the site of a fire accident in a village.

Besides Eul-hwa (1979) by Byun Jang-ho, the “Classics” section of the festival features two films — Divine Bow (1979) and Daughter of Fire (1983) — from the iconic Korean filmmaker Im Kwon-taek, who uniquely straddled both the genre film industry and the auteur world. A story about a retired shaman facing requests by her village to resume her religious practice to save them from a famine, Im’s Divine Bow was filmed on a remote island.

The “Women’s Voices” sections will show An Old Lady by Lim Sun-ae as well as Gull by Kim Mi-jo. Awarded the Grand Prize in the Korean Competition at the Jeonju Film Festival, Gull follows the painful journey of a woman seeking justice against the man who raped her.

The festival will also offer UK premieres of Yoon Dan-bi’s family drama Moving On, and Kim Jin-yu’s Bori, which will close the event. Pre-recorded interviews, live Q&As and other virtual events will also take place for audience members to dive deeper into the films on offer.
