Boris Johnson Reportedly Moved To Intensive Care

(Updated: 4:08 p.m. EDT, April 6, 2020)

Topline: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was reportedly admitted to intensive care at a U.K. hospital Monday, after being admitted Sunday after experiencing ten days of symptoms from coronavirus.

  • Downing Street, the Prime Minister’s residence, said in a statement: “Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened, and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.”
  • Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will deputize Johnson “where necessary,” according to Downing Street.
  • “The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication,” said Downing Street.
  • The BBC reported that they have been told Johnson is still conscious and was moved to intensive care in case he needed a ventilator.
  • Johnson was admitted to St. Thomas’ Hospital in Central London Sunday after experiencing a high fever that would not go away.
  • Johnson wrote on Twitter earlier on Monday that he was in “good spirits” and reminded people to stay at home to protect healthcare workers and save lives.

Big number: Over 52,200. That’s how many confirmed coronavirus cases are in the U.K., according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Over 5,300 people have died there. According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.K.’s outbreak is expected to peak as soon as this weekend.

Key background: Johnson, 55, was diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 26, 2020, and is one of the most powerful people in the world to test positive. He had been quarantining inside his home but continued to run the United Kingdom. Johnson’s admission to the hospital Sunday was “precautionary,” according to government officials, after he had experienced ten days of symptoms. Johnson had posted a video to Twitter Friday discussing his symptoms.

Other members of the British government who tested positive include Health Secretary Matthew Hancock and Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty. Carrie Symonds, Johnson’s partner, is pregnant and experiencing symptoms, according to the New York Times.

What to watch for: Any additional information on Johnson’s condition. British officials, the Times reported, are not planning to give constant updates.

Tangent: The U.K. government doesn’t have a vice president equivalent to automatically take over should something happen to the prime minister, according to the Wall Street Journal. It’s up to the U.K. cabinet to decide who runs the country if the PM dies or falls gravely ill.
