BTS’s ‘DNA’ Has Now Sold Over 1 Million Units In The U.S.

Three and a half years after BTS scored their first Billboard Hot 100 entry with “DNA,” the slow-burning track has now sold over 1 million units in the United States, Chart Data reported earlier this week.

The breezy EDM-pop banger was certified gold by the RIAA in 2018 for U.S. sales exceeding 500,000 units. It is now eligible for platinum, and upon certification it will join the ranks of other million-selling BTS singles including “Mic Drop,” “Boy with Luv” and “Idol.” (That doesn’t include BTS mega-hits that have yet to receive RIAA certification, such as the Hot 100-topping “Dynamite,” which has sold over 2 million units in the U.S.)

“DNA” first appeared on BTS’s 2017 EP Love Yourself: Her and later on their 2018 album Love Yourself: Answer. The track debuted at No. 85 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the septet’s first entry on the chart, and peaked at No. 67 the following week.

At the time, “DNA” marked the highest-charting Hot 100 hit by a Korean group, surpassing Wonder Girls, whose 2009 song “Nobody” peaked at No. 76. Multiple Korean artists have since surpassed that record, including BTS themselves, who have sent three songs to No. 1 on the Hot 100 and notched several other Top 10 hits.

The “DNA” music video has also surpassed 1 billion YouTube views, and last April it surpassed Psy’s “Gangnam Style” to become the most commented-on music video in YouTube history.

“DNA’s” accompanying Love Yourself: Her EP also debuted and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, making it the highest-charting entry and best sales week for a Korean pop album at the time.

Love Yourself: Her and “DNA” hinted at BTS’s impending superstardom in the U.S. and worldwide. Sold-out stadium shows, shattered streaming records and a slew of No. 1 albums and singles would follow, catapulting BTS into the commercial stratosphere and cementing their status as one of biggest pop acts on the planet.

From a chart perspective, BTS’s world domination started with “DNA,” and its latest U.S. sales milestone reinforces its significance and enduring popularity among the BTS ARMY.
