#ByeTiffany: Twitter Takes Aim At Tiffany Trump’s Pandemic Birthday Bash In Miami

Topline

President Donald Trump’s second daughter, Tiffany, for the most part stays out of the limelight, except for the rare appearance at a White House event or convention speech, but she’s become the target of scrutiny after a video montage created by an anti-Trump group of her celebrating her 27th birthday in Miami went viral Thursday, with critics accusing her of lacking “compassion [and] empathy” during the coronavirus pandemic.

Key Facts

MeidasTouch, which bills itself as a political action committee aimed at “defeating Donald Trump in 2020,” posted a video Thursday featuring clips of Tiffany partying at clubs in Miami spliced with clips of her Republican National Convention speech and downbeat news stories about how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted Americans.

Social media users said the video displayed the hypocrisy of Tiffany and her family, who they accuse of continuing with their privileged life and even endangering others while most Americans struggle during the pandemic.

On Twitter, #ByeTiffany began to trend Thursday afternoon as users posted messages with the hashtag and shared loved ones, milestones or experiences they’d lost because of the pandemic.

Other users defended the first daughter, saying it wasn’t the fault of Tiffany, a young woman in her twenties, that the pandemic has hit the U.S. so hard.

Tangent

Last month, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced Florida bars and restaurants would be permitted to reopen at full capacity, a move that was slammed by health experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease official that often finds himself going head-to-head with the president when it comes to coronavirus.

News Peg

This isn’t the first time a member of the Trump family has been accused of downplaying the coronavirus pandemic or endangering others. The White House is still grappling with a viral outbreak suspected of stemming from an event in the Rose Garden last month to announce Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination. The president was infected along with numerous family members, aides, White House staffers and high-profile Republicans. A reception was held inside, and neither the indoor or outdoor portions were socially-distanced and few attendees wore masks.

Key Background

A recent Georgetown Law graduate, Tiffany has rarely been caught up in controversy, in contrast to her older siblings, who are public figures in the president’s political movement. Also unlike her siblings, Tiffany was raised in California by her mother Marla Maples, a former pageant queen and the president’s second wife. “I don’t know what it’s like to have a typical father figure,” Tiffany reportedly told a reporter from DuJour magazine in 2015. “He’s not the dad who’s going to take me to the beach and go swimming, but he’s such a motivational person.” Before her father was elected president, Tiffany was perhaps best known for being a member of the “Rich Kids of Instagram,” a wealthy group of young people who gained a social media following for documenting their lavish lifestyles of international travel, fashion shows and trust funds. Like Tiffany, many were members of high-profile families.
