COVID-19: Which States Have Ordered People To Stay Home? [Infographic]

Florida and Nevada have become the latest U.S. states to issue “stay at home” orders in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) extended the closure of the state’s schools and nonessential private businesses to the end of April as well as ordering residents to remain at home unless they are buying groceries or undertaking essential business. Outdoor activities such as walking and cycling are also permitted. Florida Gov. Ron DeSanti issued a similar order and the Sunshine State’s residents will stay at home for 30 days with allowances again made for food shopping and responsible outdoor exercise.

Given the rapid rise of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the country, which states have taken actions to mitigate the spread of the virus? President Trump declared a state of emergency on March 13, 2020 in order to strengthen the government’s response to the pandemic though he has not ordered a national lockdown. Several states had already made their own emergency declarations in advance and a patchwork response has emerged which could undermine efforts to halt the virus. The disease can still be carried from critically-affected areas such as New York to lower risk areas around the country.

data, the number of states issuing “stay at home” orders has been rising steadily in recent days and 33 have such measures in place as of 02 April, 2020. Others have taken action, but to a lesser extent, with Mississippi and Pennsylvania announcing restrictions for certain counties, though the latter has just extended those to the entire state. Likewise, Utah, and Georgia have told their high-risk groups to remain at home with the rest of the populace free to carry on in relative normality. Currently, close to 300 million Americans are being urged to stay home across the country.
