Critically Acclaimed Latino Dramedy ‘Vida’ Kicks Off Final Season On STARZ

Vida, the Latino-themed critically acclaimed series about two sisters from East L.A., has returned to STARZ for its third and final season.

The original dramedy, from executive producer and showrunner Tanya Saracho, which during the past two seasons has tackled a myriad of issues, including identity, sexuality, immigration and gentrification in a Latino neighborhood of Los Angeles, was groundbreaking in many ways – from the storyline, to creating opportunities for Latino actors, writers and producers to shine.

Saracho worked to give substance to each of the characters in the story and change the stereotypical narratives about Latinos.

“When I began this journey three and a half years ago, I never dreamed that by the end of the process I’d be so wholly changed — mind, body and spirit — and that I’d be standing so strongly in my abilities to run and create a TV show the way it should have always been created: By us,” Saracho wrote in a farewell letter.

“This goodbye is too bittersweet for words. I’d be lying if I said I’m not sad about not getting back into that magical writers room to keep crafting our story. But after all, I got to tell the exact story I wanted to tell, exactly how I wanted to tell it, and that is rare in this industry. I leave steeped in gratitude. Thankful to Starz for not just allowing VIDA to happen, but for being great co-parents as we raised her together. And grateful for the collaborators whose careers we were able to launch: Latinx cinematographers, writers, actors — almost entirely female — who are now out there and in demand. What a beautiful family we built. And what a beautiful show.”

The first episode of season 3 premiered on Sunday, April 26. It’s a shorter season, with just six episodes, compared to the 10 in season 2. Saracho was tasked with giving fans a satisfying conclusion to the evolving story of sisters Emma (Mishel Prada) and Lyn (Melissa Barrera) Hernandez, but not before adding a long-buried family secret into the mix that will test their bond and ability to continue together as a family or push them on their separate ways.

The third season of Vida was written by an all Latina writers’ room and directed by Latina directors Jenée LaMarque and Tanya Saracho.

Vida, which earned a 100% “Certified Fresh,” rating on Rotten Tomatoes for the first two seasons, gave STARZ a 56% boost in Hispanic viewers in 2019, compared to the previous year. The premium cable network also saw a 17% increase in Hispanic subscribers since the May 2018 series premiere, prompting executives to renew the show just days after the season 2 debut.

The network hasn’t said why it decided to pull the plug on the show.

Vida stars Melissa Barrera (“Club de Cuervos,” upcoming In the Heights) as Lyn, Mishel Prada (“Riverdale”) as Emma, Ser Anzoategui (“East Los High”) as Eddy, Chelsea Rendon (Bright) as Marisol, Carlos Miranda (The Bling Ring) as Johnny, and Roberta Colindrez (“I Love Dick”) as Nico.
