Daniel Cormier Retires From MMA After UFC 252 Loss To Stipe Miocic

Daniel Cormier’s MMA career has ended.

Cormier hoped to end his run in mixed martial arts as UFC heavyweight champion. Instead, following a decision loss to Stipe Miocic in the main event of last night’s UFC 252 fight card, Cormier left the sport on the first two-fight losing skid of his career.

Cormier became a two-division UFC champion when he knocked out Miocic at UFC 226 to add the UFC heavyweight title to the light heavyweight crown he wore at the time. Miocic regained the heavyweight belt when he knocked out Cormier in the fourth-round at UFC 241. UFC 252 was Cormier’s chance to set things right. Instead, he listened dejectedly as Bruce Buffer announced Miocic as the winner via unanimous decision.

After the loss, Cormier spoke to UFC commentator Joe Rogan.

“I’m not interested in fighting for anything but titles, and I don’t imagine there’s going to be a title in the future,” Cormier said. “That’ll be it for me. I’ve had a long run, it’s been great. I just fought my last fight for the heavyweight championship. It was a pretty good fight.”

The 41-year-old Cormier ends his run in MMA with a 22-3-0-1 record. He spent time as the UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion and had memorable battles with Miocic, Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson among others. Before he moved to the UFC, Cormier won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament as an alternate.

It is very likely that he will land in the UFC Hall of Fame in short order.

Cormier is expected to carry on in his role as a UFC commentator.

UFC 252 took place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view card streamed on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.
