Derek Jeter Signs Unprecedented Multi-Year Deal With Topps

Derek Jeter’s Hall of Fame ceremony might be on hold for another year, but thanks to Topps, fans will enjoy a new way to celebrate the shortstop’s legacy. The baseball card giant announced starting May 2nd, they will roll out a Topps Now product that highlights Jeter’s handpicked career achievements.

The New York Yankees legend and current Miami Marlins CEO is collaborating with the iconic baseball card manufacturer as part of a four-year deal that will allow baseball’s newest Hall of Famer to share an intimate side of his baseball life with fans across the globe.

“Topps has been a great partner for a number of years. When they came to me with the idea to provide unique content and experiences, I was very interested in being part of this exciting new venture and twist on tradition,” Jeter said in a recent statement. “Collecting baseball cards is something that connects lots of people and generations. That sense of community is so valuable, now more than ever.”

Topps is setting up a unique experience through their Topps BUNT app to increase engagement going into the release. Fans will be able to submit questions for Jeter’s consideration that will ultimately spawn a new product line.

“The Topps MLB bunt team, they’re actually taking I believe the top five fan questions from that are going to be asked on the social media channels inside the bunt app, and they’re going to be asking those questions to Jeter himself and then of course, creating a product line off of it,” Topps Communications Manager Emily Kless said.

Working with Jeter for this unprecedented project, Kless was impressed by Jeter’s accessibility for the partnership. She feels he will give fans a newfound depth to his life and career in a way that hasn’t formerly been available.

“He’s very willing to be a huge integral part of the creative process for a lot of the products that are coming out,” she said. “He’s going to be involved in the experiences too. Topps has so many experiential products that we offer, Transcendent and the eventual One of One Club.

“He’s going to bring such a perspective and backstory to these products that we have not had before. We’re really excited to bring a lot of his thoughts to life. Being able to allow collectors to hear from him through the products, it’s going to be really special.”

While this announcement comes on the heels of Jeter’s postponed Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Topps had this plan in the works for a long time. The Topps Now May 2nd debut, which includes first-time ever chrome cards, comes as a homage to his legendary uniform number.

The release is the first step in a multi-tiered approach that Topps will take with Jeter over the next four years to tell his career story through baseball cards. It is an uncharted journey that the company is thrilled to watch unfold.

“To partner with one of the greatest baseball minds that that we have witnessed I believe in our generation and understand his unique experiences … is unlike anything Topps has done before,” she said. “I think that’s the most exciting part about it.”
