Dog Released From Coronavirus Quarantine Dies, Death Unlikely To Be Caused By Virus

Topline: An elderly Hong Kong dog that tested “weak positive” for coronavirus died two days after being released from quarantine, but medical sources told local media that the dog likely did not die from the illness.

  • The 17-year-old Pomeranian initially tested “weak positive” for coronavirus, with traces of the virus detected in samples taken from its oral and nasal cavities. It had not shown any symptoms.
  • The dog, who was separated from its owner and placed in quarantine, eventually tested negative and released on Saturday, but died on Monday, Bloomberg reported.
  • The cause of death is unknown and the owner turned down an autopsy, but vets in Hong Kong say the death could have been caused by the stress and anxiety of being in quarantine, Channel News Asia reported.
  • Its owner, 60, had tested positive for Covid-19 but recovered and was released from hospital on March 8.

Crucial comment: The dog, which outlived a Pomeranian’s 16-year life expectancy and had underlying health issues, probably did not die from the virus. Medical sources close to the case told the South China Morning Post: “It is very unlikely the virus had any contribution to the death of the dog.”

The World Health Organization says there is currently no evidence that pets like cats and dogs can be infected with Covid-19.

In numbers: Almost 200,000 people around the world have been infected with Covid-19 to date, while more than 7,000 people have died.
