Everybody dreams of having a great job. But to land your dream job, you first have to convince the hiring manager that of all the candidates who’ve applied for the position, you fit best for the role.

For that, you need to know what exactly the hiring manager is looking for. This will help you better prepare for your interview, making you more confident in the way you present yourself.

Here are four practical skills that every interviewer is looking for. Mastering them can help you achieve the job you’ve always wanted.

Have clear communication skills.

The first and most important thing that every interviewer looks for is fluent communication skills. In the age of globalization, most big companies have their clients and user base spread across different countries. So when an organization hires you, it expects you to be able to communicate with their clients and customers fluently.

With pleasant communication skills, you can leave a favorable impression on your clients and even turn them into long-lasting customers. Strong communication also improves your performance by avoiding confusion and miscommunication among your co-workers.

It’s also a great skill for turning a stifling work environment into a more positive and interesting one.

Be mindful of your body language.

Your body language speaks to who you are as an individual, and interviewers often use it as a tool to read your personality and examine if you’re the right fit for the job. While preparing for an interview, many candidates don’t consider body language as an important factor, but in reality, it has a lot to do with whether you’re chosen for the job.

Your body language tells interviewers how confident and focused you are. According to the Harvard Business Review, apart from your choice of words, your gestures, posture and facial expressions all convey powerful messages to the people you are talking to.

Hiring managers can even read your body language to identify if you’re anxious or nervous during the interview process. These factors can help the interviewer determine if you’re the right candidate for the position.

So be mindful of your body language. One of the biggest signs that displays you as a confident and open individual is eye contact. You should also restrict yourself from using a lot of hand gestures or fidgeting too much during the interview process. These are signs of nervousness and can show a lack of confidence.

Ask questions to clear doubts.

It’s true that in an interview, the interviewer is expected to ask the questions. But sometimes, the interviewer might ask you if you have any questions for them. This is your chance to clarify any doubts you may have about the position or the company. It’s also a great opportunity to make an impact on the interviewer, so be smart with your questions.

Instead of posing random questions, make sure your questions are relevant and display that you’re genuinely interested in the position. You can ask questions like:

• What will be my goals for the first three, six and nine months in the position?

• How will my success be measured?

No matter what questions you ask, make sure they do not lead to simple yes or no answers. Interviews are a two-way street, so by asking the right questions, you can strike up a meaningful conversation that can be beneficial for you.

Prepare for unexpected questions.

A very important factor that helps you crack an interview is your presence of mind. Hiring managers always look for candidates who can solve unexpected problems that come their way. They know that employees who have a strong presence of mind and can easily solve even the biggest of problems will be assets to the company

But in the short span of the interview process, it’s difficult to test how good your presence of mind is. That’s why they often ask you questions that are tricky and need quick analytical skills. So, you should be prepared for such questions. Providing smart answers for such questions can help the hiring manager see you as an individual with strong logical and decision-making capabilities. This can be a great way to crack the interview and get the job you’ve been looking for.

Securing your dream job isn’t easy. First, you need to prepare and work hard to achieve the position you’ve been seeking. But in doing so, you often discover just what you need to be successful. This will help you move in the right direction and achieve the position you deserve.
