Juggling Work and Study: A How-To Guide

For many people, work and studying can go hand-in-hand. Earning a qualification and working a job are two parts of life that many people strive towards, but often the two need to be done at the same time — whether it is because you are an adult returning to education, a young student trying to earn some money on the side whilst graduating, or even if you are simply trying to learn a new skill as a hobby whilst working.

Juggling work and study can seem overwhelming and demanding, but this guide can help you get organized.

✅ If Studying is Your Priority, Do not Work Too Much

If your main focus is your qualification, then your working situation may need to be adapted depending on your financial needs. It is a good idea to work out a budget and see how much income you need coming in while you study. For instance, if you are studying and trying to hold a full-time job, could you afford to switch to a part-time job? Perhaps you even have a job with flexible working hours where you can have someone cover your shift if needed.

If studying is what is going to help you develop your overall career compared to a job simply to pay the bills for now, then do not let yourself become burned out by a job you do not want in the long-term.

✅ Try Online Studying

Online studying is going to be extremely helpful if you are trying to balance a working schedule alongside. This is because online studying will allow complete flexibility for when you can study, rather than being restricted to a physical class schedule. This will help you to plan your online studying around your existing working schedule, so that neither has to take a hit.

You can find many different college courses online to fit around your working schedule.

✅ Create a Set Schedule

The best way to handle everything you have going on is to form a week-by-week schedule, and stick to it. Plan out your work shift and study schedule so that you can best prepare. This will also help to alleviate stress so you do not feel overwhelmed wondering about deadlines, or when you will have time to study.

✅ Leave Yourself with Time Off

Working and studying can be extremely stressful and time-consuming. Even if you have dedicated goals and enjoy working hard, time off is essential to recharge. If you do not allow yourself days off and are trying to work or study too much, then you are going to risk stress and burnout which could affect the success of your studies.

If you are trying to save up a lot of money alongside your studying, it can be tempting to work extra shifts or work on your days off, but just remember to do only what you can comfortably do and find time to relax, too. This means you will always be in your best frame of mind for your job and your studies.

Follow this guide and you will be better organized with your work and study so that it will not feel like too much pressure.
