The App That Protects Employees During Terror Attacks

As terror attacks, natural disasters, and gun attacks skyrocket, businesses are under pressure to protect their employees.

The director of an app and monitoring service is hoping to help employers fulfil duties of care.

IncidentEye is designed to help protect employees from potential risks, especially when they are mobile or working alone. Organizations can rapidly locate employees.

“In recent years, terror attacks and natural disasters have become a growing global threat,” says director of IncidentEye Alan Coulter, 62. “Companies are under increasing pressure to protect their staff during critical events but this can be challenging.

“One of the main safety challenges large companies face during an incident is understanding the whereabouts of their staff,” he adds.

Employees can download the app on their phone which remains dormant until there is an incident.

In any kind of crisis, managers can log on to IncidentEye’s crisis response hub, immediately identify who is in the vicinity of an incident and prompt employees to specify whether they are safe or in danger.

“The app and monitoring service makes it easy to send tailored communications to those at risk, without disrupting the majority who are not affected by the incident,” Coulter says. “IncidentEye’s disaster response technology ensures that when crisis strikes, businesses are equipped to handle the situation quickly and effectively.”

The company, which is based in London with around 30 employees, was launched by safety app specialists StaySafe in 2018 in response to the growing global security issue.

Coulter cites his competitors as tending to be US companies, including Send Word Now and OnSlove.

“Our competitors typically offer mass notification systems, however, these are unable to locate people in an incident.

“We saw a gap in the market and created IncidentEye to allow large companies to quickly and easily locate and protect their employees in an emergency.”

“We know that trying to understand complex IT systems is not something people want to do in a crisis so we’ve designed IncidentEye to be easy to deploy and intuitive to use.”

However, with six in 10 Americans believing their online – and offline – activities are being monitored by both the government and companies with regularity, it is an understandable concern that employees would not wish their phones to have an employer-controlled app.

For the app to work effectively, every employee needs to download the app onto their phone.

“We have faced understandable concerns about privacy previously as the app is able to track the location of employees,” Coulter says.

“These concerns are based on an initial lack of understanding about our privacy requirements and controls,” he assures. “Once employees download the app, it lies dormant on their phone until an incident. The app is only used to locate and communicate with employees in an emergency when they need help or assistance.

“We’ve put rigorous measures in place which address these concerns and ensure that IncidentEye can only be used in crisis.”

And, as for the future, Coulter’s ultimate ambition “would be that incident management becomes standard practice at all large companies”.

“We want all employees to expect that their employers can locate and communicate with them in an emergency.”
