Florida Reported Over 200 Coronavirus Deaths Wednesday—Most Of Any State Since May

TOPLINE

Florida has again set a coronavirus death record, posting a sobering new high for a second-straight day, as deaths in the state have now reached levels that haven’t been seen anywhere in the U.S. since the spring coronavirus surge in the Northeast.

KEY FACTS

Florida reported 216 coronavirus deaths Wednesday, breaking the record of 186 set Tuesday and continuing to reverse what had been a trend of declines.

This is the first time any state has reported over 200 deaths in one day since Pennsylvania did so on May 21, according to data from The COVID Tracking Project.

Florida is the first state outside of the Northeast to reach such a high.

Florida isn’t alone in having deaths spike to record highs, since California and Arkansas also posted new records Tuesday.

Statistics last week and over the weekend showed Florida may have turned the corner in its battle against coronavirus spread, but essentially all major metrics for detecting increased spread are now going in the wrong direction again.

KEY BACKGROUND

Florida is morbidly leading the way as the U.S. approaches 150,000 coronavirus deaths as a whole. Deaths in the U.S. are at their highest point since May, and have steadily increased after over a month of spiking cases and hospitalizations.

SURPRISING FACT

For now, deaths in the U.S. are still well below what they were in April and May, when the first major coronavirus surge largely affected the Northeast, and New York in particular. During the worst of its impact in mid-April, New York was averaging around 750 coronavirus deaths a day.

TANGENT

Florida being the first state to report over 200 deaths in a day excludes Texas’ number from July 27, when the state added 675 deaths. But that death toll was greatly inflated, since that’s the day when Texas included a review of death certificates throughout the pandemic, which identified coronavirus as a cause. Texas truly had only 44 new deaths on July 27, according to The COVID Tracking Project.
