Former RNC Chair Michael Steele Joins Pro-Biden Republican Group Lincoln Project

TOPLINE

Former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele announced Monday that he is becoming a senior advisor to the Lincoln Project, a PAC comprised of anti-Trump Republicans that has run ads supporting former Vice President Joe Biden and Democratic Senate candidates.

KEY FACTS

The former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and the first African American RNC Chair, Steele refused to endorse Trump in 2016 and has become a vocal critic of him and his administration.

In a statement, Steele slammed Trump for his “narcissism” and for “chaos and confusion” under his leadership, expressing a commitment to “resetting the course of our nation” and working towards a different future for the Republican Party.

Steele’s announcement is the latest in a series of Republicans denouncing Trump and announcing their support for Biden in recent weeks, with a group of 27 former GOP lawmakers endorsing Biden on Monday and former Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) calling Trump “not conservative” and arguing that his behavior “has not and will not change.”

The development comes just a day after attorney George Conway announced he was stepping back from the group amid public disputes with his wife, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, and their vocal 15-year-old daughter Claudia.

Key Background

The Lincoln Project is a group of prominent Republican strategists and media figures committed to denying President Trump a second term. In addition to Wilson, its leaders include John Weaver, a top strategist for the McCain and Kasich campaigns, and Steve Schmidt, a former aide to George W. Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is known for running scathing attack ads “trolling” Trump, once even reportedly prompting the Trump campaign to make a six-figure ad buy in heavily blue Washington D.C. to assuage the president’s frustrations over Lincoln Project ads.

Crucial Quote

“We believe in something other than one man,” Steele said of the GOP during an MSNBC appearance on Monday. “I’ll be damned if I’m going to cede that ground to Donald Trump who is not now nor has he ever been a Republican.”

What To Watch For

More Biden Republican endorsers may be forthcoming. The Biden campaign has launched a “Republicans for Biden” initiative, which they say will be a “national effort to engage Republicans who are supporting Biden this fall,” and “encourage Republicans to organize their communities for Biden using the Vote Joe app and other relational organizing tools.”
