Georgia’s Top Election Official, Spurned By Trumpworld, Goes Rogue On His Own Party

Topline

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican who oversees the state’s elections, has become increasingly outspoken about members of his own party as he faces attacks from Trump and his allies baselessly claiming that he allowed voter fraud that led to the president’s loss in the state.

Key Facts

Raffensperger has faced calls to resign from his state’s Trump-aligned senators; was allegedly pressured by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) to toss legal mail ballots; and has been labeled a “so-called Republican (RINO)” by Trump, who accused Raffensperger, without evidence, of presiding over a “very unfair” process.

Trump has repeatedly tweeted scathing attacks against the Georgia recount – which Raffensperger said is likely to “affirm” Biden’s victory in the state – often citing false information or baseless conspiracy theories about widespread fraud to do so.

Raffensperger has begun hitting back in recent days, particularly by attacking Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) – who is heading up Trump’s legal efforts in Georgia – calling him a “liar” and a “failed candidate” for losing his Senate race and telling Insider he’s “the president’s mouthpiece.”

“(He) did nothing for election integrity,” Raffensperger said of Collins during an interview with WSB-TV in an effort to cast his allegations of “incompetence” as ingenuine, stating, “He blew two years, and he needs to answer for that… I’d love to hear his excuse. I’m sure it will be a humdinger.”

Raffensperger also argued it was Trump’s repudiations of mail-in voting, not fraud or a broken system, that cost him Georgia, citing 24,000 Republicans who voted in the primary but not the general election as an example of how he “suppressed his own voting base.”

Crucial Quote

“The election appears to be very accurate and as a Republican, I’m disappointed, but as a Secretary of State, my job is to report accurate results,” Raffensperger told Insider.

Key Background

Raffensperger’s relations with the Trump camp were strained before the election, according to a ProPublica report. Raffensperger reportedly turned down an offer to be an honorary co-chair of Trump’s campaign, believing it to be a conflict of interest. A Trump campaign senior advisor allegedly burst into a meeting about election procedures to demand Raffensperger’s endorsement. Raffensperger told ProPublica he believes the current attacks are “clear retaliation.”

Surprising Fact

Trump gave a glowing – if confused – endorsement to Raffensperger in 2018. “Brad Raffensperger will be a fantastic Secretary of State for Georgia,” he tweeted, telling supporters it’s “really important that you get out and vote for Brad.” In a follow-up tweet, Trump said Raffensperger is “tough on Crime and Borders,” “Loves our Military and Vets” and will be “great for jobs.” The post primarily involves overseeing elections, public records and other administrative functions.
