Giants Reveal Plan To Deal With Coronavirus Outbreak

The Giants are joining a growing list of sports teams, businesses, and other community organizations in their response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The Giants released a statement Thursday afternoon describing plans to postpone business travel, including that of scouts and coaches who have been attending college pro days around the country.

In addition, the team said it has required most of its employees to work from home for the next two weeks and has limited visitor access to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, the Giants’ East Rutherford, New Jersey headquarters.

The limiting of visitors likely means that any potential free-agent visits that might have been planned starting March 18, the official start of free agency, probably won’t take place.

The same could hold true for draft prospects whom teams typically host for visits at their facilities as part of the pre-draft process.

With the situation being fluid, it hasn’t yet been determined if the Giants will open their doors to their players on April 6, the scheduled start of their off-season conditioning program.

It’s also not known if a voluntary minicamp if new head coach Joe Judge planned one as per the allowances made by the current CBA to teams with new coaching staffs, will take place.

Earlier in the day, the NFL announced that it poss annual league meeting scheduled for March 29 through April 1 has been postponed. The NFL also announced that the 2020 HBCU Combine and Regional Combine events have been canceled.

The coronavirus outbreak has already led other professional sports leagues and college programs to cancel planned events.

The NBA announced Wednesday that it was postponing games after one of its players tested positive for the COBID-19 virus.

The NHL announced it has suspended play; the NCAA has canceled its annual tournament; and MLB has announced that it has canceled the rest of spring training and pushed back the start of the 2020 season by two weeks.

The Giants, in their statement, said they will continue to monitor the situation with their internal staff as well as healthcare professionals and officials from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
