Here Are The 9 Shows HBO Just Made Free For Everyone To Watch In Lockdown

We are starting to see more and more streaming services provide some level of their content for free to those stuck inside during the pandemic with nothing to do but stream. Part of this may be out of the goodness of their hearts, but it’s also probably to try to get people to subscribe to watch the rest of their series down the road.

The newest, and one of the biggest offerings so far comes from HBO, which has just made a big chunk of content available for free on HBO NOW and GO (I forget which is which at this point). That includes a bunch of documentaries and movies, but also dozens of hours of some of its best series in history, ranging from classics to shows that are still airing today.

Here’s the list of nine shows that HBO has made free for the indefinite future:

  • Ballers (5 seasons)
  • Barry (2 seasons)
  • Silicon Valley (7 seasons)
  • Six Feet Under (5 seasons)
  • The Sopranos (6 seasons)
  • Succession (2 seasons)
  • True Blood (7 seasons)
  • Veep (7 seasons)
  • The Wire (5 seasons)

Of that list, all but two shows have finished airing in their entirety, meaning you can watch the whole series at once. The only shows that are still airing new episodes (though not right now) are Emmy favorites Succession and Barry (both of which I highly recommend).

It’s hard not to recommend most of the shows on the list, frankly. If there was ever a time to sit down and watch all-time classics like The Sopranos and The Wire, it’s now. Veep is one of the best comedies I’ve ever seen. Six Feet Under is widely heralded as having one of the best series finales in history, so it’s worth the investment. The only two shows I can’t really comment on would be Ballers, as I simply never watched it because I’m not into sports and didn’t know who any of the guest stars were. And while I did watch about 3-4 seasons of True Blood, I dropped off eventually so I can’t really tell you how it ends or if it’s worth all the time.

This is a a lot of content, given that many of these series have full hour episodes and with 10-13 episode seasons, that’s dozens of hours for individual shows like Six Feet or Sopranos. I think I have to recommend the remastered Wire over everything. Then Veep. Then Sopranos. Then use your best judgement (but again, I think you should catch up on Barry and Succession too, which might make you want to subscribe to HBO for future seasons, which I’m guessing is their plan).

Anyway, a lot to choose from here and it’s hard to go wrong with most of these. Start watching here right now.
