Here’s Who Else The GOP Is Considering For President As Trump Hints At 2024 Run

Topline

Despite President Trump’s interest in running for a second term in 2024, the Republican National Committee is making moves to signal that its options are open, reportedly inviting over a dozen other presidential hopefuls to a meeting in January as the party considers how it can, or whether it should, move on from Trump.

Key Facts

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel—who was recently endorsed by Trump to keep her position—reached out to a litany of GOP notables about speaking at the meeting in Florida, typically one of a slew used to assess and extend the party’s presidential talent pool, according to Politico

Trump is just one on a list with roughly a dozen other invitees, as McDaniel insisted in a Wednesday email to the committee’s 168 members that she will “work to ensure all Republican candidates can be successful.”

The list of invitees feature a number of Republican senators, many of whom have gained prominence through staunch support for the president: Tim Scott (S.C.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), Ted Cruz (Texas), Josh Hawley (Miss.), Joni Ernst (Iowa), Rick Scott (Fla.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.).

South Dakota’s Gov. Kristie Noem, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey were also invited to speak.

Finally, Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina who served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, and Vice President Mike Pence are on the list of invitees.

Most on the list have not indicated whether they will attend the meeting, and Trump’s spokespeople refused to comment on whether the president would go.

Key Background

Trump’s teasing of a second run, while making increasingly bizarre attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, has reportedly sown confusion in the Republican Party about a path forward. Politico notes that while publicly flaunting Trump’s endorsement of her for another term as head of the RNC, McDaniel has been privately reassuring top Republicans of her neutrality to the president in the 2024 race. Trump’s advisors have signaled that he could announce his bid for president in the next few weeks, which would diminish the chances of other party hopefuls, several of whom have publicly endorsed another Trump run.

Crucial Quotes

“If he were to run in 2024, I think he would be the nominee,” said Hawley. “And I would support him doing that.” Scott agreed: “It’d be great if he ran. He’s done a good job.”
