Some 4 million people across Italy are returning to work on Monday after a two month lockdown—which saw businesses and workplaces close—is now being eased as the number of new coronavirus infections and deaths continue to fall.

KEY FACTS

Offices can reopen from Monday, but should abide by social distancing rules, while residents can leave their homes to visit relatives within their region.

People can also visit public parks, while construction and manufacturing sites have also reopened.

But most retailers will stay closed until at least May 18, while restaurants cannot open for dine-in service until June 1. Grocery stores, and bookshops are just some of the stores that are open as of May 4.

On March 9, Italy was the first country in the world to activate a nationwide lockdown of its population of 60 million people as the centre of the epidemic was rapidly shifting from China, to Europe.

Almost 29,000 people have now died in Italy after contracting coronavirus. On Sunday, some 1,389 new cases were reported compared with 1,900 on Saturday, while 174 people died, marking the lowest daily death toll since lockdown began.
