Judge Orders ‘Cheer’ Star Jerry Harris To Stay In Jail Until Trial For Child Porn Charge

Topline

Cheer star Jerry Harris will remain in jail until he is tried for a child pornography charge, a federal judge in Chicago ruled Friday, saying the evidence shows Harris would be a “danger to the community if released.”

Key Facts

U.S. Magistrate Judge Heather McShain said after learning about the investigation, Harris got rid of his cellphone, got a new one and continued soliciting explicit photos from minors, which the judge stated reveals he is unable or unwilling to control his behavior.

McShain said the evidence laid out by the prosecutors supports her decision and noted it would be “virtually impossible” to make sure he didn’t use the internet if released.

Prosecutors argued Harris admitted to victimizing minors and should be detained until trial because he poses a danger to the community.

Harris’ lawyers argued he would not pose a threat if he were released under strict home confinement.

Key Background

Harris was charged in September with one count of producing child pornography and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum of 30 years. Harris allegedly asked at least 10 boys to send sexually explicit photos and sexually assaulted a 15-year-old boy, according to prosecutors.

Tangent

Harris became famous for his role in the 2020 Netflix documentary series Cheer, which followed the Navarro College cheerleading squad in Corsicana, Texas.
