Live Sports Returns To Telemundo With Premier League Soccer After Pandemic-Induced Hiatus

Telemundo is back in the sports game. For the first time since airing its last live match on March 8, soccer returns to the network.

Coverage of Premier League’s 2019-20 season resumes today, June 17 across Telemundo, Universo and Telemundo Deportes’ digital platforms, kicking off with two matches: Manchester City vs. Arsenal on Universo and Aston Villa vs. Sheffield on the Telemundo Deportes app.

The League had been on hiatus since March 9. During the COVID-19 sports drought, the network aired reruns of Premier League matches during the weekends to fill the previously scheduled sports programming grid.

Telemundo Deportes will present 18 matches through July 2 with the first full round weekend beginning Friday, June 19 at 3:15 p.m ET, when Tottenham hosts Manchester United live on Universo.  p.m.

In the midst of the pandemic, the viewing experience will be very different. Premier League returns with no fans in the stadiums. To make it more interesting, Telemundo Deportes’ production will offer viewers an enhanced experience, with the opportunity to hear everything said by players, referees and coaches on the field.

For the first time, natural sound will be clearly captured by ground level microphones and delivered as main audio in all the games, along with Spanish play-by-play and commentary.

As an option, for viewers that prefer crowd sounds following live-action, an alternative will be available via SAP, adding atmospheric pre-recorded audio provided by Premier League and EA Sports.

Andrés Cantor and his legendary GOOOOOL! call will once again resonate on-air, as he celebrates his 20th anniversary with Telemundo.

As part of the celebration, Telemundo Deportes’ weekend programming will incorporate special segments, celebratory messages and clips that highlight memorable moments of the commentator throughout the past two decades.

Cantor has become a staple of Telemundo’s coverage of sporting events including 7 Premier League seasons, 5 Olympic Games, 6 years of Mexican soccer coverage, World Cup qualifier matches since 2009 and FIFA broadcasts, since the company acquired the media rights in 2011, including 2 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Confederations Cup and the unforgettable World Cup Russia 2018.

Cantor will lead Premier League play-by-play commentary along with Sammy Sadovnik, Copán Álvarez, Eduardo Biscayart, Carlos Hermosillo and Manuel Sol. The commentators will also contribute to the pre and post analysis alongside Miguel Gurwitz.

Sports analysis show, La Liga Premier: Tercer Tiempo also returns to the network to recap each weekend’s action beginning Sunday, June 21 at 4 p.m. ET with a special edition streaming live on the Telemundo Deportes app.

Each matchup will be preceded by the pre-game show La Liga Premier Extra.
