Major Reveal Set For Upcoming Bachelorette Episode

After months of speculation, one of the worst kept secrets in The Bachelorette franchise will finally be revealed this week. Clare Crawley is out as The Bachelorette and Tayshia Adams is in. Prior to the season, rumors surfaced that Crawley had found love early on, paving the way for Adams to take over as the lead. The show had previously not commented on the possible changes but released a major spoiler at the end of last week’s episode as Adams emerged from a swimming pool. And in a surprise twist, the reality dating show’s longtime host Chris Harrison posted a new promo to his Instagram account on Saturday confirming the switch.

“Boys, it is great to see all of you here because you guys got a little cheated. You didn’t really have an honest chance to find love. So your new Bachelorette is on her way here, right now,” Harrison tells the suitors. “The big question. Who is she? Well, how about I just go get her and let her come in here?”

“The next person to walk through these doors will be your new Bachelorette, and possibly your wife,” Harrison adds as he walks away to welcome the new lead.

“As nervous as I am, I’m sure she’s doubly nervous right now,” says one contestant as another adds, “I’m sure she’s nervous, but hopefully she’s ready for what she’s getting into.”

The show is leaning into the spoilers after months of unsubstantiated rumblings lit up social media. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Harrison explained the new approach. “We debated, how do we promote it? When do we promote it? How do we lean into it?”And I think we did it perfect last episode with that jarring, kind of slap in the face of, ‘We’re done ignoring this. We’re here with you. We get it. This is coming to a head — stay tuned.’ It wasn’t the wink-wink, nod-nod. It was the screaming at the top of our lungs: ‘Here we go!'”

This season’s Bachelorette has faced stiff competition in the ratings. The show typically airs in the summer but was bumped to the Fall lineup due to disruptions in production during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This also meant a shift from the usual Monday to Tuesday nights to avoid conflict with Dancing With the Stars. There has also been competition from the National Football League and Major League Baseball’s World Series. The season premiere debuted to a 1.3 rating among adults 18-49 (a slight drop from season 15) and 4.8 million total viewers, matching last year.

The two night finale of the most recent season of  The Bachelorette with Hannah Brown  garnered the highest ratings for the show since the 2017 finale. Part one drew in 7.15 million viewers and part two 7.4 million with an impressive 2.1 in the pivotal 18-49 demographic. This was an improvement over Rachel Lindsay’s season in 2018 which was down 24 percent in the 18 – 34 category with a 1.9 versus the previous summer’s 2.5. Lindsay’s season fared a bit better in the crucial 18-49 demographic with a 2.2 average but this was still a 15 percent drop from 2016’s 2.6 rating. Brown’s season had the benefit of a drama filled ending when it was discovered that the recipient of her final rose was dating another woman just before joining the show.

This week’s episode will air on Thursday due to Tuesday’s Election Night coverage.
