Meghan Markle Is Working With Michelle Obama To Register Women Voters

Meghan Markle will be a special guest Thursday at a virtual voter registration event held by Michelle Obama’s nonpartisan organization When We All Vote that aims to reach 300,000 eligible women voters.

KEY FACTS

To commemorate the centennial of the 19th Amendment, When We All Vote teamed up to host a week of events with The United State of Women, a gender equity organization born out of the Obama administration’s White House Council on Women and Girls.

Markle, former Obama White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, Glamour editor in chief Samantha Barry, actress Yvette Nicole Brown and DJ Diamond Kuts will participate in the event Thursday.

When We All Vote said it is committed to closing the race and age gap for voting and that Obama is joined in this effort by celebrity co-chairs Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Janelle Monáe, Chris Paul, Faith Hill, Selena Gomez, Liza Koshy, Megan Rapinoe, Shonda Rhimes, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kerry Washington and Rita Wilson.

When We All Vote said it is fighting for “fair and safe elections” by supporting the expansion of access to vote-by-mail, early in person voting and online voter registration in response to the coronavirus pandemic; a topic which has been hotly debated.

Markle’s participation is noteworthy because members of the British royal family are reportedly expected not to discuss politics, although the rule may not apply since the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry stepped back from their royal duties in January and no longer formally represent Queen Elizabeth.

Markle said she will vote in the 2020 Presidential Election in a Marie Claire article in August which featured Obama, Gabrielle Union, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Hillary Clinton and 95 other famous women who shared why they’ll be voting.

“I know what it’s like to have a voice, and also what it’s like to feel voiceless,” Markle told Marie Claire. “I also know that so many men and women have put their lives on the line for us to be heard. And that opportunity, that fundamental right, is in our ability to exercise our right to vote and to make all of our voices heard.”
