Over 4,000 Republican Poll Watchers Reportedly Recruited For Georgia Senate Runoffs

Topline

Republicans are organizing the “largest and most aggressive” poll watching operation in Georgia history, recruiting more than 4,000 volunteers to monitor ballots cast in the state’s U.S. Senate runoffs, according to Fox News, with those races deciding which party will hold power in the U.S. Senate.

Key Facts

The number of committed poll watchers is already more than the GOP had for the presidential election, an official told Fox News.

Republicans are requesting increased access to ballot counting locations, and filed a lawsuit demanding continuous surveillance footage at all drop box locations.

The poll watchers will observe the state’s upcoming early voting period leading up to Election Day on Jan. 5 in the two Senate runoffs, according to Fox News, with an official telling the network the GOP will hold “regular trainings for poll workers.”

President Donald Trump has claimed there was widespread fraud during the presidential election that caused him to lose to President-elect Joe Biden, but thus far there no evidence has surfaced of widespread fraudulent voting in Georgia.

Two recounts, including one requested by the Trump campaign, have affirmed Biden’s win in the state.

Crucial Quote

“We are building the largest and most aggressive ballot security operation in Georgia history, and we have filed lawsuits to make sure that there are eyes on every part of the election process that is legally open to the public,” the Georgia GOP said in a tweet Wednesday, commenting on the Fox News story.

What To Watch For

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) has joined Republican calls for Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) to conduct an audit into signatures on absentee ballots, but Raffensperger told CNN that’s not within his authority as secretary of state. It’s also highly unlikely an audit would uncover widespread fraud since signature matching was already done during the state’s recounts.

Key Background

Incumbent U.S. senators David Perdue (R) and Kelly Loeffler (R) both failed to win a majority of the vote in November, requiring runoffs for both Senate seats on Jan. 5. Republicans currently hold 50 seats in the Senate, meaning that Democrats would need to win both seats to reach an equal 50-50 split of the senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris serving as a tiebreaking vote for Democrats if needed. The races may end up being the most closely-watched and expensive in American history.

Tangent

Polling shows Democrats with a lead for both of the Senate seats, but bettors aren’t convinced, with Perdue and Loeffler both heavy favorites in election betting odds.
