Poll: Nearly 80% Of Laid Off Americans Believe Jobs Will Return

TOPLINE

The overwhelming majority of Americans who have lost work amid the coronavirus pandemic believe their jobs will return, according to a new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center For Public Affairs Research that finds Americans optimistic about their personal finances, despite a cratering economic outlook.

KEY FACTS

Down slightly from January, 64% of those surveyed described their personal finances as “good,” while 78% of people who lost work said they expected to return to their jobs in the future.

Only 17% of those polled believed their personal finances would worsen.

At the same time, the poll found a slim 29% of those surveyed considered the economy at large to be in good shape, compared to 67% in January.

11% reported trouble paying credit card, rent or mortgage payments, while 19% could not afford to pay another type of bill.

Consistent with similar polls, the survey indicates that most Americans strongly support stay-at-home orders, with 61% approving their state’s action and 26% advocating further restrictions.

BIG NUMBER

26 million. That’s how many Americans filed for unemployment in the past five weeks, with 4.4 million added on Thursday.

TANGENT

On Friday, President Trump signed a $484 billion coronavirus relief bill to help lift the floundering economy, which includes $310 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program, $75 billion for healthcare workers and $25 billion for coronavirus testing.
