Senate Democrats Call On USPS Governors To Override DeJoy, Remove Him If Necessary

TOPLINE

A group of Democratic senators is taking its opposition to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s controversial operational changes a step further, calling on the USPS Board of Governors to reverse DeJoy’s changes and even remove him if necessary.

KEY FACTS

DeJoy, a logistics executive and GOP mega donor who has given $1.7 million to Trump’s reelection bid, was appointed to his post in May and has since overseen sweeping operational changes, including the elimination of overtime pay and the removal of mail sorting machines.

Democrats have harshly criticized DeJoy and Trump – who has long decried the postal service’s lack of profitability, a problem exacerbated by the pandemic – accusing them of sabotaging mail delivery ahead of the November election, in which an unprecedented number of mail-in ballots is likely to be cast.

The senators, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), penned a letter to the Board of Governors decrying DeJoy’s changes – including the displacement of several executives overseeing day-to-day operations, the decommissioning of mail sorting machines and a policy “requiring that carriers leave mail ‘behind or on the workroom floor or docks’” – as slowing down delivery times, threatening the election and having “no valid explanation.”

Noting that the Board oversees DeJoy and “directs the exercise of the powers of the Postal Service” the senators called on them to revoke DeJoy’s powers, reverse changes that have “harmed service,” and, if DeJoy refuses to cooperate, remove him by a majority vote.

The Board is made up of 6 members, all of whom were appointed by Trump, and has just two Democratic governors compared to four Republicans, making the senators’ appeal unlikely to come to fruition.

Surprising Fact

The letter is signed by a fairly broad ideological coalition, including several senators who ran against each other for president in 2020. In addition to Schumer and Warren, progressive Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) also signed, as did moderate Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.) and Gary Peters (D-Mich.).

Crucial Quote

The senators are urging the Board of Governors to look past partisanship, arguing that they should stop DeJoy from “directly undermining the mission” of the USPS. “Federal law specifically restricts the number of Governors belonging to any one political party and requires that Governors must be ‘chosen solely on the basis of their experience” in fields relevant to Postal Service administration,” they wrote. “While members are appointed by the President, the duty of Governors is to ‘represent the public interest generally.’”

What To Watch For

One of the Democratic governors of the board, former pilot, airline executive and public affairs consultant Lee Moak, put out a statement on Saturday in response to “several hundred emails,” announcing that he and the other governors are working to “better understand policies and procedures in place to ensure every American who chooses to participate in our upcoming election by mail will have their voice heard and their vote counted.”
