Spain Sees Fewest Daily Coronavirus Deaths In More Than A Month

TOPLINE

Spain’s Health Ministry announced on Friday the lowest number of coronavirus deaths in a day—367—in more than a month, as the country works on a plan to reopen society after enforcing one of Europe’s strictest lockdowns.

KEY FACTS

Spain’s Health Ministry recorded only 367 coronavirus deaths on Friday, the fewest in more than a month and a drop from the numbers seen last week, when the daily number of deaths ranged between 500 and 600

The Health Ministry on Friday began to report the total number of confirmed cases according to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test results (believed to be the most reliable tests) which show Spain has 202,990 total infections.

Taking into account only PCR tests, Friday is the first day that Spain has reported more recoveries from the virus than new infections since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry’s Coordination Center for Health Alerts director Fernando Simón called it “good news,” on Friday and said it “is the best figure recorded in weeks.”

Health officials also confirmed that the transmission rate had not been significantly affected by the return of some nonessential employees who went back to work two weeks ago, a good sign for the eventual reopening of the economy.

KEY BACKGROUND

Spain has been one of the hardest hit countries in the world during the coronavirus pandemic. With 22,524 confirmed deaths in total, it falls behind only the U.S. and Italy for the most coronavirus-related fatalities. Since the pandemic began, 92,355 patients have been discharged from Spanish hospitals after making a recovery.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

A slow scaleback of Spain’s coronavirus crackdown. On Sunday, the country’s children will be allowed to leave their homes to go on walks for the first time since the lockdown began on March 14. Children under the age of 14, when accompanied by an adult, will be permitted to go outside for an hour per day within just more than a half-a-mile radius from their home. However, health officials said Friday that there was no evidence to allow for restrictions to be lifted on any other demographic, indicating that Spain will take its time to reopen society. The government began setting up goals this week to be met in order before lifting the nationwide lockdown. Criteria include no more than two daily cases per 100,000 people in a particular area, and no more than half of ICU beds being taken up by coronavirus patients, according to Reuters.
