Start a Career in Real Estate by Registering in an Online Broker License Course

If you have an entrepreneurial mindset, people skills, and the desire to work in a lucrative market, real estate may be the field for you. Recent projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicate an increase over the next decade in employment opportunities for licensed real estate professionals, and with the possibility of taking an online broker license course, interested candidates can attain their license and start selling property within a few short months. Whether you’re a recent graduate eager to enter a new market or a seasoned professional seeking a career change, the first step is to register in a real estate broker license course—from there, you’ll be selling property and earning commission in no time.

5 steps to earning a real estate broker license

Step 1: Enroll in a Broker License Course

As long as you’re at least 18 years of age, a high school graduate (or equivalent), and a law-abiding citizen of the United States, you can become a licensed real estate broker in the state of Utah. If you meet these requirements, you’ll want to initiate the process by finding a respectable institution that offers the pre-licensing course. When searching for organizations, make sure they’re accredited, committed to excellence and staffed with experienced and trained professionals working in the field. Doing so will ensure that you build the skill set and acquire the knowledge necessary to pass the pre-licensing exam and get your application approved by the state.

Step 2: Complete Course Hours

Once you’ve enrolled, you’ll want to carve out time in your schedule to complete the standard number of hours for real estate broker courses in the state of Utah: 120 hours. With an online program, you will have the flexibility to set your own pace and work from the comfort of your own home or office, where you can expect to learn everything you need to know about the real estate industry, including federal and state laws, as well as the skills necessary to appraise and evaluate property.

Step 3: Take Course Final

At the end of the course, you will be required to take a comprehensive final exam that assesses your acquisition of foundational skills and knowledge in your real estate broker license course, which is designed to prepare you for the pre-licensing exam (the official exam administered by Pearson VUE and required by state accrediting agencies). If you score a 70% or higher on the course final, you will go on to take the official test.

Step 4: Register for the Pre-Licensing Exam

Upon completion of the course and receipt of a sufficient score on the course final, you will be eligible to take the pre-licensing exam. In the state of Utah, this test is divided into two parts, assessing your understanding of both state and national requirements. This online exam lasts 4 hours, costs $59, and is composed of 130 multiple choice questions—as long as you’ve enrolled in a quality real estate broker license course, you shouldn’t have any problems passing the test.

Step 5: Submit Your License Application

After receiving notification that you’ve passed the pre-licensing exam, you can submit your application. Materials should include your application, school certificates, the qualifying questionnaire, fingerprint documents, certification of legal presence, a fee of $158, and any other documentation as stated by the accrediting agency. If approved, you can set up your organization, start finding clients, and sell property—all while building a credible reputation and earning commission on your sales.
