When curating so many new skills to better meet the demands of your business, you may find it silly to focus on yourself as a person. After all, you’re learning to be a better founder, employer and salesperson. You may feel it’s frivolous to focus on improving your personal life, taking time away from your passion and income. However, if you neglect yourself, especially your mind, your business can suffer the consequences.
Just as exercising to keep your body healthy is important, so is exercising your brain. While problem-solving at work can be stimulating, your mind may default to what it already knows. Only when you force your brain to work in different ways can it begin to expand and strengthen its cognitive function. In other words, you must make a concerted effort to build new mental skills.
Through my personal experience and in speaking with guests on my podcast, I’ve come to see that mindfulness can improve your brain health. The stronger and more aware your mind is, the better you will be at critically thinking about your business and tackling any issues that arise.
First, I would like to define mindfulness as having the ability to be aware of your thoughts, feelings and surroundings moment to moment in a nonjudgmental way. Throughout the day, every person — especially an entrepreneur — is constantly thinking of a thousand different things. Our brains can easily jump between subjects, and most of the time, without our awareness. In essence, we think at such a rapid rate that we oftentimes don’t register what we’re actually thinking about and why.
The issue is that when we are unaware of our thoughts, we can’t control them. When we don’t have active control over our cognitive process, we can fall victim to distraction and negative thinking. As an entrepreneur, you need to be focused on your work and confident enough to believe in it. Without these two qualities, you can find yourself crippled with anxiety before you even begin your business.
Mindfulness is a self-aware, non-judgmental state that allows you more control over your mind, yourself and therefore your business. So, how can you reach this state? I believe the answer is through meditation.
When you think of meditation, you may think of it as a trendy buzzword that has recently entered mainstream media. However, its current popularity may obscure the fact that for thousands of years, meditation has benefited the mentality, brain health and happiness of those who practice it. The best part about meditation is that it doesn’t have to cost anything and that anyone can pick it up.
While there are many varieties of meditation, for this article I will be speaking on focused attention meditation. Focused attention medication involves the focus on your breath and the practice of keeping your thoughts from wandering. When you begin to train your brain to focus on one thing, you begin to exercise your ability to control your thoughts.
Meditation seeks to help you notice what goes through your brain as well as gain autonomy over it. If you can achieve a sense of authority over your own mind, then you can become more attentive to combatting negative thoughts.
For example, if you run into an obstacle at work, you may find yourself slipping into pessimism. If your mood sours, it can end up ruining your whole day. With skills learned from meditation, however, you can stop your negative thinking before it spirals out of control, saving yourself from a bad mood and unproductive day. This awareness of your mentality and the ability to control it means that you have achieved mindfulness.
While you do your best to buffer your business from hardship, you will eventually enter a period in which your company is at the whim of the environment. Especially in this confusing time of Covid-19, many businesses are being affected by factors that their owners cannot control.
However, if you can learn to master your thinking, you can train yourself to remain calm in the most tumultuous of times. When you are calm, you allow yourself the freedom to be creative, and through creative thinking, you can overcome the chaos.
