New York City To Close At 8 P.M.—Here Are All The Major City Curfews

TOPLINE

After an 11 p.m. curfew did little to prevent looting in New York City overnight, Mayor Bill de Blasio said residents are required to be home by 8 p.m. Tuesday night. Here are the other top cities across the country with similar curfews in place:

KEY FACTS

Washington, D.C.: 7:00 p.m. EST

Los Angeles, California: 6:00 p.m. PST countywide, but Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Long Beach all have a 4:00 p.m. PST curfew.

Chicago, Illinois: 9:00 p.m. CT

Dallas, Texas: 7:00 p.m. CT

Minneapolis, Minnesota: 10:00 p.m. CT

Detroit, Michigan: 8:00 p.m. CT

What we don’t know

If curfews will be extended in other cities, as some mayors are making the choice whether to extend them daily. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania instituted a 6 p.m. EST curfew for Monday, but is holding its presidential primary Tuesday, with polls open until 8 p.m.

Key background

Protests sparked by George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, Minnesota have spread across the country. Reports say the protests, which tend to begin in the mid-to-late afternoon, begin peacefully. But once day turns to night, sometimes-violent conflict between protesters and police tends to occur. Vandalism and looting has been observed across the country, from luxury shops in Manhattan to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and beyond. Many local government officials have voiced their support for people’s right to protest, but have condemned the violence and vandalism.

Crucial quote

There are justified peaceful protests across the state tonight. But there are also people criminally exploiting this pain and this moment, wrote New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Twitter Monday night, about a half hour before the state’s 11 p.m. curfew. “We will not tolerate it.”
