Stevie Nicks Sells Majority Stake In Songwriting Catalog

Legendary rock songstress Stevie Nicks has sold a majority stake in her songwriting catalog—including hits Dreams, Landslide, Rhiannon and Edge of Seventeen—to independent music publisher Primary Wave.

The deal comes on the heels of Dreams charting in Billboard for the first time in more than four decades thanks to a viral Tik Tok video of a man skateboarding and chugging a bottle of Ocean Spray cranberry juice while listening to the No. 1 tune.

The enduring Nicks-penned song, off Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album Rumours, in October saw its best week of streams and digital sales in the US to date, bringing it to more than a half-billion plays on Spotify alone.

It also comes as the value of owning publishing rights continues to skyrocket in the age of music streaming.

Vivendi last year sold 10 percent of its stake in Universal Music Group to Chinese Internet behemoth Tencent Holdings Ltd. for the equivalent of $3.37 billion. More recently, Shamrock Capital Advisors LLC last month purchased Taylor Swift’s early catalog from Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holding’s for more than $300 million. Ithaca only months before had purchased the catalog from Big Machine Label Group for about the same price.

Primary Wave purchased an 80 percent interest in Nicks’ copyrights, which reportedly are valued at close to $100 million. The partnership also will see the publisher represent the Grammy winner in brand marketing opportunities. Additional terms of the deal enable her to sign new songwriters to a joint venture.

The publisher and talent management company is also home to iconic artists including Bob Marley, Smokey Robinson, Whitney Houston, Prince, Ray Charles and Aerosmith.

“To say we’re excited to welcome the incredible Stevie Nicks to the Primary Wave family would be a dramatic understatement,” said Larry Mestel, CEO/founder of Primary Wave Music Publishing. “If Primary Wave were starting our company today, Stevie Nicks would be one of the shining pillars, a true legend among legends.”

Nicks is the only woman to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice—first in 1998 as a member of Fleetwood Mac and again in 2019 as a solo artist. Over the course of her career, she has received eight Grammy nominations and two American Music Award nominations as a solo artist, as well as another five Grammy nominations and a win for album of the year as a member of Fleetwood Mac.
