SuperM Talk Pressures To Follow Up Their No. 1 Album: ‘We Put Double The Amount Of Effort’

Last summer, SuperM had the towering task of not only proving that a K-pop “supergroup” could successfully enter the music industry but make a global impact while doing so. The septet succeeded—and then some—after scoring a No. 1 album in America, embarking on an arena-filling world tour and, as noted in their first Forbes interview last October, finding a genuine camaraderie between the seven superstars. Now in 2020, they are faced with how to do it even bigger for their next release.

Luckily, SuperM should have nary a worry of a sophomore slump when it comes to their ambitious Super One full-length album. The LP not only brings the turbo-charged K-pop that one would expect from “the Avengers” of the genre but wholly accessible English-language cuts to act as additional entry points to Taemin, Baekhyun, Kai, Taeyong, Ten, Lucas and Mark. The singles “One,” “Tiger Inside” and slinky standout album cut “Drip,” represent the latter while tracks like “Big Chance” and “With You” bring together euphoric, feel-good melodies that connect no matter what language the listener speaks.

When asked about any pressure they feel, SuperM don’t admit to any stress or worries but instead see their past success as “motivation” to make their latest product that much stronger.

“Our first EP release was No. 1 and to have that No. 1 was an honor but it also helped us thank our fans,” Mark shares in a virtual press conference with reporters ahead of the LP’s drop. “It was our first EP as SuperM and to have our fans really provide their strength and support us really felt great. That motivated us to really work harder on this album while we put double the amount of effort we did on our last EP on this album. We believe the album’s quality went up that much more and we can’t wait for our fans to hear Super One.”

Mark saying that the group put in “double the amount of effort” almost sound too humble as SuperM wound up putting together 15 tracks for Super One (up from the five tracks on their initial self-titled debut) and already three singles and accompanying music videos to support the release (compared to the singular focus track “Jopping” from 2019).

But beyond the impressive musical output, what’s also stayed intact is the uplifting energy between the members. Throughout the press conference, SuperM enthusiastically greet each reporter, make their Korean-to-English translator laugh in between questions all while showing a sibling-like affection for one another like when Mark gave Kai several brusque, playful back rubs.

At a time when many people around the world need help feeling super themselves, the group sees their conceptual creation as a way to help inspire those who may need extra encouragement.

“If you look at our past music videos, there’s helicopters, tanks, a lot of cars; that goes really well with SuperM’s concept as a group,” Kai shares. “That’s why those modes of transportation were illustrated through our music videos. We can’t really travel right now because of the pandemic and everything that’s going on, but we really hope that—just like these modes of transportation take you somewhere—that our songs and our music and this album can be that mode of transportation to take you to a place of hope and to take you to that higher place where everyone can enjoy themselves and be happy.”

Taemin adds, “Rather than as individuals, we all need to come together and unite to overcome.”

And if the world ever needed a supergroup to take them to that “higher place,” it’s now, making SuperM’s latest release all the more perfectly timed.
