The 10 Most Wildly Popular TV Shows Right Now

Judging by what Americans want to watch on television right now, everyone’s looking for a mental escape.

And perhaps that’s no surprise. With the election coming up, month seven of the global pandemic settling in, and social unrest continuing to bubble, the nation apparently wants to forget its collective problems for a few minutes, just for entertainment’s sake.

A new analysis of the top 300 TV shows across all platforms, performed by Parrot Analytics, finds that the biggest rise in demand is for programs with escapist themes, such as soapy royal drama, spooky Halloween scares — and even that most escapist of all elements, a wacky cartoon.

Parrot found that Starz’ The Spanish Princess, which just released season two, had the biggest gain in demand of any program, up 182.5 percent for the week ended Oct. 13 compared to the week ended Oct. 6. With plenty of drama in our own political circles, it’s not hard to imagine many people enjoying the escape of thinking about someone else’s political issues.

That was well ahead of the No. 2 program, Animaniacs, a cult classic cartoon from the 1990s that’s getting a reboot on Hulu. The streaming channel recently released a trailer for the new program, which likely spiked interest in the original, produced by Warner Bros. Demand for the program shot up 132.5 percent.

Netflix’s big Halloween production, The Haunting of Bly Manor, was No. 3 with demand up 128.5 percent. The series has the perfect scare factor for this time of year, great binge material right before Halloween.

Of course, the in-demand shows also reflect other parts of pop culture. HBO Max staged a West Wing reunion of sorts this week, with the cast gathering to reenact a popular episode less than a month out from the 2020 election. So, it’s little surprise to see Wing, which originally aired on NBC from 1999 to 2006, surging up to No. 8 in the greatest demand category.

Other interesting shows popping onto the list? Netflix’s much-discussed Emily in Paris ranked 10th, while DC Universe’s seasonally appropriate Swamp Thing was sixth, and AMC’s The Walking Dead: World Beyond ranked fifth.
