The Boulet Brothers’ Bring Dragula Spin-Off To Shudder

The popular horror-drag reality competition, The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula, is getting its first spin-off with a two-hour film, The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula: Resurrection, which premieres October 20 on Shudder. The film follows the titular performers as they welcome back past competitors from the first three seasons of the show to compete for a spot in the upcoming fourth season. The top competitor will also walk away with a twenty thousand dollar cash prize.

The film features the Boulet Brothers themselves, Swanthula Boulet and Dracmorda Boulet as well as past fan favorites, Frankie Doom, Loris, Kendra Onixxx, Dahli, Victoria Elizabeth Black, Priscilla Chambers, and Saint (formerly St. Lucia.)

As season four of Dragula was delayed due to the pandemic, the Brother’s felt it was a good time to execute an idea that they had been thinking about for years. “We have always wanted to bring our stars back in front of the camera,” Dracmorda Boulet says. “We have done three seasons at this point, and people fall in love with them… We have always wanted to get them back on TV but in an original format.”

In the film, they meet the competitors in their home cities, which was dangerous outside of the usual horror scope. “It was pretty terrifying I have to admit, we are in a pandemic,” Dracmorda Boulet says. “We went to places that were not taking the pandemic as seriously. They aren’t wearing masks, they aren’t social distancing, and coming from Los Angeles, we are extremely careful. So that was pretty terrifying. Outside of that, we were filming at really dangerous, crazy locations and conditions.”  Swanthula Boulet interjects, “We like to practice what we preach.”

Picking who would return for the special wasn’t an easy task. “We wanted to offer contestants that maybe didn’t have the opportunity during their season to show enough of their arc or their personality or what motivates them,” Swanthula Boulet explains. “It is a Halloween special too, so we wanted people who love the holiday… Lastly, the tenants of the show are filth, horror and glamor, so we wanted to look back and chose contestants that really represent that.”

Regular seasons of Dragula are on Netflix
NFLX
, but the film seemed like a fit for Shudder, a horror streaming platform. “Shudder just seems like the right partner,”  Dracmorda Boulet says. “I think we might hijack the channel and bring a bunch of freaks and monsters and queers to their platform. It will be a beautiful marriage like the Bride of Frankenstein and Frankenstein, but that didn’t end too well, so scratch that.”

The film feels different from a usual season of the show. “I think something that surprised us was how personal the experience was,” Swanthula Boulet explains. “The audience really gets to see into the lives of these artists. Yes, it is a competition, but it’s also a showcase of seven artists that live in all four corners of our country. I think it will be like a time capsule when we look back,… of what the United States was like during a pandemic.”

“I can’t imagine that anyone would watch this and not feel moved by it and not feel better off after watching it. I think it is that inspiring,” Dracmorda Boulet adds. “It’s the best content we have ever put out as far as production value. I have never seen drag presented on TV this well done before.”

It was important for the brothers to both showcase diverse queer stories and feature horror-inspired drag that has been ignored by the mainstream in the past. “More and more people opened their eyes to the idea that this is an art form with limitless boundaries and we feature monster artists that exemplify that,” Swanthula Boulet says.

While Dragula gains more attention with each season and now a spin-off, the brothers are committed to their own brand of drag. Swanthula Boulet explains, “As the show gets bigger, it will never lose [our queer and punk expression] and we are just getting started.”
