Tiger Woods-Designed Short Course At Pebble Beach To Include Replica Of Iconic Par-3 7th Hole

Tiger Woods and his design firm revealed plans for the re-imagined par-3 golf course at Pebble Beach Golf Links, unveiling a nine-hole routing anchored on “playability and creativity” with an average hole length of about 75 yards.

The second hole of the layout is the longest on the course, a 106-yarder designed to be a replica of the famous seventh hole at Pebble Beach — just without the water.

“Pebble Beach is such an iconic golf destination, we want guests to feel the entirety of that spirit when they play this course,” Woods, whose TGR Design firm was selected in December to build a new course on the former site of the Peter Hay par-3 course. “We also know not everyone who comes to Pebble Beach will have a chance to play the U.S. Open course, so we wanted to create the opportunity for all visitors to experience one of its most famous holes.”

The new short course, located high above Stillwater Cove and just a short walk from the first tee at Pebble Beach, will feature holes ranging in length from 47 to 106 yards. Woods has incorporated dramatic terrain movement in shaping the entirely new layout, with four holes reoriented to play directly toward the water.

The facility will also feature a 20,000-square-foot putting course that can be set up in a variety of hole and routing locations, as well as a 5,000-square-foot food and beverage venue. The F&B area will have a full kitchen and bar, with both indoor and outdoor seating, including the resort’s largest outdoor patio that’s positioned for expansive views of the short course, putting course, Carmel Bay and Point Lobos.

Located between the Pebble Beach Pro Shop and the Golf Academy, the short course facility is scheduled to open in Spring of 2021. Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, the project was originally planned to be finished by the fall of 2020.

The original par-3 course, which dated back to 1957 and was named for Pebble Beach’s former head pro, had become a bit rough around the edges over the years. Woods and his team are seeking to restore the original vision, providing a spot that brings new players to the game, brings families together, and is fun for players of all ages and abilities while still offering a challenge for skilled golfers.

“Everyone who plays this golf course is going to enjoy the playability of it,” said Woods. “Golfers will have the choice to play nearly any club off most tees and around the greens, which will make them think and channel their creativity. It will also play differently from day to day depending on the tee and hole locations and wind direction. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I can’t wait to play it.”

Woods grew up in California and won the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach by 15 strokes for the third of his 15 major championship wins.

The yardage for each of the holes at the short course have been aligned to correspond with a significant year in Pebble Beach history. Plaques will be included on each hole to help tell the story of the resort’s championship heritage. The 92-yard eighth hole, for example, will likely tell the story of Tom Kite’s breakthrough major victory at the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

“You can see the genius of Tiger Woods and TGR Design come to life when you walk the site, the way it all fits together,” said Bill Perocchi, Chief Executive Officer of Pebble Beach Company. “I expect all aspects of this new facility will be very popular for junior golf events, resort golfers, outings, resident hang-outs, and everything in between.”
