Today’s Wordle #663 Hints, Clues And Answer For Thursday, April 13th

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through April. Time is flying by, which I’m not happy about. I feel old enough and my birthday is just over two months away. I’m not ready to be 42, even if it is the meaning of life, the universe and everything.

I’m actually trying to devise a way to do a Meaning Of Life, The Universe And Everything birthday party for myself this year. If you’re not familiar with this concept, it’s from Douglas Adams’ book The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy. It’s a little hard to explain—but a very funny novel which I highly recommend!

In any case, I’m perfectly happy with time slowing down, thank you very much. Not only am I turning 42, my daughter is turning 16 (SIXTEEN!) in less than two months, and in just over three my son will be 13. I’m not ready!

Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday, which means we had a riddle. Here is the solution.

The Riddle: Robert’s father has three sons: Snap, Crackle, and _____?

The Answer: Robert!

K that was more of a trick than a riddle. I’ll do a harder one next week.

Okay let’s do this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Measuring with carob seeds.

The Clue: There’s a double letter in this word.

The Answer:

This was one of those oh-so-lucky Wordles for me. It started out oh-so-unlucky with Ouija leaving me with a whopping 710 possible solutions, by far the worst I’ve had in months after my opening guess. My attempt to whittle down the vowels with a vowel-forward word appeared to be for naught.

At this point I thought maybe I should guess Wordle Bot’s favorite word, slate, but for some reason I’ve been thinking about using carat lately, just because if you need to test out the placement of the ‘A’ it really makes sense. The wild thing is, carat was one of the words I was toying with as an opening guess today also. That would have been crazy lucky!

Still, I got it in two, slashing 710 possible solutions down to just 1. That’s some absolutely bonkers luck. I’m trying to think why carat was even in my head, and it must be because I just finished reading Marathon Man and the final moments of that book deal with diamonds. Go figure.

I beat Wordle Bot’s three guesses which equals 1 point. 2 more points for guessing in two. Unfortunately, we’re not on double XP until tomorrow so I can’t double my winnings. Oh well! 3 ain’t bad! Huzzah!

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)

The word “carat” has its origin in the Greek word “keration” (κεράτιον), which means “carob seed.” In ancient times, carob seeds were used as a standard of weight for precious stones, because of their consistent size and weight. Over time, the weight of a carob seed became standardized to approximately 0.2 grams, which is the same as one modern-day carat.

The word “carat” first appeared in English in the mid-16th century, and it referred to the weight of a carob seed. Later, in the early 20th century, the word was used exclusively to refer to the weight of diamonds and other gemstones. Today, one carat is defined as 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams, and it is used as a standard unit of weight for diamonds and other precious stones.
