Today’s Wordle #676 Hints, Clues And Answers For Wednesday, April 26th

They say that April showers bring May flowers, but we’re not getting much rain. A bit earlier this week but mostly just sunny and windy. Still, so much snow fell on us this winter that we have several impromptu streams and extra lakes which is quite lovely. Before, it was just a ditch—now it’s a river!

I’m still in a bit of a winter frame of mind, however. I think it is a bit of lingering seasonal depression. The winter funk has not lifted and will not be forced. I’ve had some health-related issues that have made it a bit harder to get the amount of exercise I normally need to stay sane and not sink into a deep pit of misery and despair, so that’s not ideal—but this, too, shall pass. Or so they tell me. Whoever they are.

Not the voices in my head, surely. In any case, let’s do this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: City. Rail.

The Clue: This word ends with a vowel.

The Answer:

I’m not sure why I thought of tiger today. Like yesterday (opening word ropes) I just picked the first thing that came into my head. Well, the first five-letter word, in any case. This ended up being a surprisingly good guess, with three yellow boxes and—Wordle Bot informed me later—just 34 possible remaining solutions.

I decided to re-order the letters I had and try for one more vowel in my second guess, crate, but this didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. Still three yellow boxes, and still too many possible words left. At this point I could think of several: metro, retro, retry, entry, rebut and so I came up with a word that would use as many letters as possible that I didn’t already have: mousy.

Sure enough, this slashed my remaining options down to just one: metro for the win! Huzzah!

My score today: Sadly, today is another loss for your humble narrator. I get zero points for guessing in 4 and one point lopped off for losing to Wordle Bot, who got this one in three (slate / titer / metro) the lucky duck. That’s a grand total of -1. Oh well. I’m still happy that the Bot very nearly lost yesterday. That would have been pretty hilarious.

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)

The word “metro” comes from the Greek word “metron,” which means “measure.” In ancient Greece, “metron” was used to refer to a measuring instrument or standard of measurement, and it was later used to describe a system of measurement or a method of calculating distances.

The word “metro” in English is commonly used as an abbreviation for “metropolitan,” which refers to a large city or urban area and its surrounding suburbs. It is also used as a short form for “metropolitan railway,” which is a type of urban rail transport system commonly known as a subway or underground. The word “metro” has been used in this sense since the late 19th century, when such systems were first developed in major cities around the world.
