Trump Campaign Offers Preview Of Election Night Strategy, Claims Biden Will ‘Steal’ Election

Topline

In a preview of how President Trump and his allies might be planning to contest the results of the election, Trump campaign advisor Jason Miller predicted Sunday the president will be leading on election night before Joe Biden and his campaign will try and “steal it back.”

Key Facts

“President Trump will be ahead on election night,” Miller told ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, “and then they’re going to try to steal it back after the election,” apparently referring to Biden and his campaign.

The claim indicated the Trump campaign may attempt to launch a legal battle against mail-in ballots not counted on election night, which are expected to be disproportionately Democratic

Trump campaign senior adviser Corey Lewandowski told Fox News Sunday he thinks the election will be “won on election night with Donald Trump carrying Florida and North Carolina, and Ohio and Michigan and Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,” even though experts say we’re not expected to know the results in several of those states on Tuesday.

“If that’s the case,” Lewandowski went on, “there will be no need to continue to count because there will be a resounding victor”—another apparent attempt to undermine mail-in votes.

For weeks, the president and Trump campaign officials have been hinting they will challenge the results of the election and have sought to undermine trust in mail-in ballots and the tallying process. “The Election should end on November 3rd., not weeks later!” Trump tweeted Friday:

Two days earlier, Trump had gone a step further, suggesting the courts should stop vote counting after November 3rd: “Hopefully, the few states remaining that want to take a lot of time after Nov. 3 to count ballots, that won’t be allowed by the various courts.”

Key Background

We never know the official results of the presidential election on election night. For instance, in the days following the 2016, then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton narrowly led Trump in the popular vote. Clinton went on to win the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes. On election night, news organizations project results using partial tallies—but that will be much harder this year because a disproportionate number of Americans are voting by mail due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Big Number

80 million. That’s how many Americans are expected to vote by mail this year.
